That doesn't make sense, either. Why would all the major weather forecasters predict a larger storm than expected just to make sensational news stories? Chicken Little would not make for a good weather girl. The storm was exactly as strong as they predicted. It's path just ended up farther east than expected. Nobody in Boston is saying the storm was a dud.

From what I understand, they overestimate snowfall by design. Same reason that it fails to rain 30% of the time when meteorologists give a 100% chance of rain.

Yeah, but sometimes they overdo the hype.  The Weather Channel said this was going into the "hall of fame" and that it was "a historic storm" (before it happened).

Good to be prepared for the worst, but sometimes the drama gets overdone.

Those are two different things.  The meteorologists who are forecasting aren't the same people who are creating the TV graphics and the headlines.  And people who are making the important decisions are going off of the forecasts, not the hype.  (Well, I sure hope so)

There's even a third category of people: the NWS people who run the models and collect/generate the data that the meteorologists base their forecasts off. They're even farther removed from the headlines and closer to the decision makers.
