Have a great time, Jerry.  I'll be playing at your place while you're in Hawaii.

If you are playing in Napa, I'd think about Silverado over Chardonnay unless it is too late to change your mind.  Chardonnay is funky with 6 each of par 3s, 4s and 5s.  It also can be breezier than Silverado.

I like the Ocean Course at HMB over the Old Course as the Old Course works its way through a fair bit of housing.  18 on the Old Course is a good hole, but if you play the Ocean Course you have Ocean views almost the entire time.

I've played Harding and think you will enjoy it.  That area can get windy -- I played Olympic last week and there was a 4-5 club wind.

Enjoy!

Pasatiempo is a class act. Half Moon Bay Ocean is worth playing, as is Bayonet and Black Horse. Next time I go to SFO it will be Presidio or Harding Park. ps is there a Syrah course in Napa? I like my wine and my golf to be full bodied. None of this Chardonnay business.

Have just returned from a similar trip to SFO and played Harding Park, Presidio, San Juan Oaks, Wente Vineyards, Cinnabar Hlls and Sonoma. Of these i rate Presidio as the best, Sonoma close behind and Harding park as overrated. I would play all again at the right price. Golf Now deals are the way to go if you are not fussy about tee times.

How did you like San Juan Oaks? I've played it 4-5 times. It's really nice, especially once you get past the first few holes but it's a very tough track.

I really liked San Juan Oaks. A very well laid out course with the front nine in the flat valley and the back nine winding around the hills. Some great holes on the back. The 13th "chute" tee shot, the split fairway hole, the canyon hole up over a ravine (where I found about a dozen ProVIs) and the spectacular downhill 17th. Well done Freddy. Also reasonably priced, and a cool clubhouse. Definitely one to go back to.

If you are going in the direction of Monterey, consider De La Viega in Aptos.   Sometimes called "the course from hell".  Play it more than once as there is a steep learning curve.  Inexpensive.    Bayonnet at Fort Ord is, in my opinion, grossly over-rated.  It's greens are absurd.  Think of a stimpmeter at 12 with the greens having extreme level changes.  It is not unusual to have a player putting and miss the cup on a short 3 foot putt, going what should be 16 inches (initially) too long, then continuing off the green by 45 feet.... off the fringe by 20 feet and into a trap.  I have played it twice, never again.  The last time, at the end of my round, I asked the pro where the skee-ball jump, windmill and clown structures were.   It's a bad joke.

One course not on your list is Lincoln, its in golden gate park. The first twelve hole or so feels like you've been  playing up hill. The course will feel like it has been beating to death. When you get to the 17th tee and the golden gate bridge is at your feet so to speak, After seeing that view you will see you really won't care anymore. Have a wonderful trip.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
