Did Phil miss his attempt or was that a practice swing?

Always makes me feel a little better about the game ( or how difficult it is) when the pros screw up like that.

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

On one hand I feel bad that the crowd isn't close to the action but there is a considerable decrease in "baabaa booeys" and "get in the holes"...

Get in the hole is so old and so juvenile. I wish they'd permanently ban any one who says that from all future events.

It's not the poa they are complaining about its that the fescue greens got some poa that invaded it causing the bumpy greens

With that said, the greens are obviously not perfect but the course looks cool and it's been a great tournament. I'm really enjoying the open this year even with all the controversy

Nice first post. :-) That's what it is,  the poa grows in these conditions and the fescue stays dormant. This is what you get in the NW this time of year.

I'm a little surprised that Coetzee was permitted to switch to a driver of different make and specs mid-round. I would have thought he would need to replace it with the same make and model. I'm also a little surprised that his sponsor wasn't on hand to get a replacement in the bag. What happens if he has the best driving day of his life with that Cally? Lol...awkward...

I was just about to say the same! In this day and age when manufacturers are putting equipment out in seconds notice there was no rep for him? Also, what's with Reed wearing shirts and pants two sizes too big? lol

I don't know what happened with his driver (I missed that part), but if your club is damaged in the course of play, you can replace it with any other legal club as long as doing so doesn't unduly delay play. He could have asked for a 64 degree wedge instead if he wanted. I'm very surprised his sponsor wasn't there for him though. Same as when Tiger broke an iron against a tree at the Masters a few years ago. You'd think they'd stick around until every player with any of their clubs is off the course... just in case.

Often, they have to get to the next site and be there for Monday-Wednesday. They might also want to go home for a day or two. Further complicating things, at The Memorial, for example, Jack doesn't allow equipment vans to be on site, so they send a skeleton set of stuff out and that's all they've got.

Pros don't often break stuff and need instant replacements.

All good points. That makes sense; for the past decade (the entire time I've watched golf), I can only think of it happening three times anyway, and one wouldn't have been able to get a replacement anyway (because he didn't notice it until he had played a stroke with the damaged club).

There's a bunch of guys on the course today posting 67 and 66. Not sure how much tougher the conditions will be in a few hours, but it looks like someone from the leaders group will need to get to -7 to win this thing.

    • Did you look up any Rules before posting here? What did you learn or find? You don't get to drop (or place) closer to the hole. 16.1(c) deals with relief for Abnormal Course Conditions in bunkers. You're granted free relief for: Since you say the bunker was basically entirely full of water, you likely wouldn't get complete relief, so for free (no penalty strokes), you are entitled to "maximum available" relief. If there's a spot in the back of the bunker away from the hole where the water is the shallowest, then you can drop there. If you don't like any of those options, you can take a penalty stroke and drop out of the bunker, behind it: You seem to have played from a wrong place (nearer to the hole) and thus likely should be penalized two strokes. It doesn't sound like a serious breach, at least.
    • I feel that the stock grips on my Wilson D9's are a little thin.  The grips on my other clubs (purchased used online and sold by me a couple months ago) were Golf Pride and they looked like the wrapped version.  I will say they felt like they had a little more cushion.  I don't have particularly large hands.  Did the grips on my other clubs have more tape or was just a better feeling softer grip?  I have no idea.  Well, any brands you would recommend that have a softer feel?
    • So this situation happened. A bunker in front of the green was full of water. My ball was underwater in the very back of the bunker furthest from the green. There was a small patch on the front upslope of the bunker nearest the green that theoretically could have been used to hit from if the ball was placed.  A drop would just roll back into the water. And this was the only part of the bunker you might be able to get a stance without standing in water. So my question is do you hit from that small front slope even though you would have to move the ball 6-7 closer to the pin? Or do you drop outside the bunker making sure you are no closer to the pin? I dropped in front of the bunker, so I had to chip over the whole bunker. Was this the right call? Also could I have moved it latterly outside the bunker, although this wouldn’t have made much difference as my ball was pretty much as far back in the bunker as you could be away from the hole.
    • I just got my shotscope v5 watch and used it yesterday. Its fairly accurate at the course I was playing so I did not use my rangefinder at all. I was able to calculate what club i needed from that.
