Saw this instructional video on chipping from Jim Furyk and it was very helpful to this beginner. I never before considered chocking down on my irons and taking a putting stance, but I tried this and was amazed at the results it produced.

Great method for little bump'n'run chips from just off the green. As Ray Floyd likes to say, chipping is simply putting with loft. Pretty fool proof method and if combined with the rule of 12 to understand fly-to-roll ratios, quite a deadly little tool to have in your toolbox.

Somehow this escaped me last night. Missed long over the green about 5 yards behind the flag. I had about two feet of rough to clear, damn near putted it. But no I manage to skull it 14 feet past the hole on the way to bogey.

Nobody behind so I hit it over and over with toe down putt chip and never left it more than 18" from the hole. Holed 3 of the 14 I attempted. Total goober mistake.

Yeah, perfect situation for this technique.

Yeah, I've used this method more lately early in the season because conditions have been soft and I've had a couple too many fat shots / duffs. I think it's great.

I was just thinking, does holding the club so vertically change the lie angle and thus the direction the ball will go?

Unrelated, every time I see a post by @9wood , I think it's 9iron and wonder why it doesn't somehow come around to berating Tiger Woods, haha.

Agree. I think with club loft creep (stronger loft irons) the rule of 12 may be closer to 13 or 14 these days - worth double checking your actual ratios for your swing & club set.

Absolutely. You start with the rule of 12 and experiment with real life chips and adjust to your set and swing characteristics, AoA and whatnot.

Whats the rule of 12?

On my way out so just quickly, Subtract the number on the club from 12 to get approximate fly-roll ratio. Example: 7iron. Subtract 7 from 12 and you get 5. So the fly to roll ratio is 1 to 5, for ever foot of flight you'll get roughly 5 feet of roll. A PW is a 10 iron so you'll get roughly 2 feet of roll for every foot of flight. Experiment a bit to dial in your particular irons but it's s good rule of thumb to start from. Modern lofts will tweak the formula a bit so play around with it.

Whats the rule of 12?

Explanation of what it is already covered well. The idea behind the system is that hitting to a shorter target safely (~ 3 ft) on the green & letting the ball roll to the hole is more consistent than taking a longer swing to fly it the whole way. Also, because it's a smaller swing, the bad miss is generally more acceptable that with a harder swing.

If you are good at reading greens & have decent putting touch it's probably a good way to go.

There's some more info on this chipping style on the Paul Runyan threads (and the chipping with a putting method thread already posted by @boogielicious ) :

Makes some sense that longer swings means more chance for error.  Pros, and others, prefer fast greens coz less clubhead movement, among other reasons.  Chipping with an 8i means less club movement, compared to sand wedge so may be better for most of us.

I really like his advise of keeping upright with these shots, I used to get too bent over like a full swing and the ball never popped right, standing up with less knee bend and my chest up a bit worked like a charm, it's just putting, great advice.

This short lesson has been the best game-improvement reminder I've had in some time. My short game had become very "yippy" lately, especially my chipping...to the point that it was really beginning to get in my head. It's not that this was a new technique or concept for me, but I had gotten away from this over time. Spent 30 minutes on the chipping green working on this before Saturday's round, then took it to the course and never hit a bad chip all day! Sometimes we just need to be reminded of the simplest things...

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
