As I have been making some swing changes this year I have started to suspect that some of my equipment may be ill-fitted for me.  I hesitate to schedule any fittings because my swing is still in flux but at the same time I worry that working with ill-fitting equipment may be causing me to make bad adjustments to accommodate my existing equipment that I will just have to undo later on.

What does TST think? Will my fitting specs change drastically as I make swing changes? I'm thinking especially about wedges and woods since they appear to be most dependent on 'active' variables, but irons could be effected too, right?

Unless the club specs drastically change, like being way too flat or long, I don't think it's that big of a deal. A good golfer has a good swing, even with ill-fitting clubs.

There are different types of fittings, some which are dependent on your swing and others that are static based on your height and distance of your hand from the ground.

Most likely if you've really improved your swing and increased your club head speed, you may find that the shafts in all your clubs need to be stiffer or different kick point.

Sounds like you have already made up your mind to purchase different clubs, might s well bite the bullet and build your swing with the clubs you intend to play.

Will my fitting specs change drastically as I make swing changes?

Club preferences are usually a matter of "feel" and what a person likes with looks, setup, swing weight, shaft flex, etc.

You could changes specs and probably "dislike" the change more often, then strive to correct the club or worse "swing"

I worry that working with ill-fitting equipment may be causing me to make bad adjustments to accommodate my existing equipment that I will just have to undo later on.

I think you are on the right thought. Why have any doubt, if you feel the clubs are wrong for you.

Two or three years down the road and you could be looking for another change.

That's the beauty of golf. There's many great products which everyone would love to try or play and then try something different later down the road.

What type of swing changes are you suggesting? Are you going to change an element, or just tweak it for more reliability? Give us some specifics on the nature of the swing alteration, and why you're doing it.

As for clubs, start here: do the face-decal test and the sole-tape test to find data on shaft length and lie angle. Then, get some launch monitor data. What will changing equipment deliver for you?

Like, you're a 6.8 HDCP... how bad can things be?

I wouldn't worry about it with the irons and wedges, you're a 6, your specs/shaft flex aren't going to change drastically especially when a big part of your specs are dependent on your height/wrist to floor measurements. The driver could be a different story in terms of loft depending on your angle of attack.

The big changes are to plane (returning club closer to address angle, currently I am more upright), and delivering more shaft lean at impact to lower launch. Idea is to get the ball lower and lefter that I used to hit it.

Be careful with that, shaft doesn't return to exactly to it's address angle, handle does raise.

Spot on for me.   After getting fitted for new clubs, I took lessons which changed my swing drastically.  I am still "good" with the new clubs but I had to change my driver's loft after the new swing settled.

For me, improving my swing meant a more athletic and less upright body position, which changed the required lie angle for my irons. I went down from 3 degrees upright to 1 degree upright

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
