I think we'll stay with noon for Saturday, @GolfLug is planning to drive up from Virginia Beach on Saturday morning, and I know that's a 4-hour drive, if not a bit further.

If we do three threesomes at Stoneleigh, @DaveP043  might have to make a how to play the course handout, for the group without him or I in it. Having a little course knowledge is pretty key for playing several of the holes for the first time.

Can you all tell that I have way too much time on my hands?  As @jsgolfer has suggested, I've made a "how-to" guide with a little info on each hole.  I've saved it as a pdf, so if you'd like to see a copy before you get here, I'll need to email it to you.  I think the best thing is to send me a private message with your email, and I'll take care of it.  If you want to include the other players in a mass private message, we can all exchange emails without telling the entire world, but you can decide what level of privacy you prefer.

I think at this stage, everyone has re-confirmed except @Jeremie Boop and @SavvySwede.  I know both of you guys are coming from well out of town, if you need any help with arrangements please let me know.

Speaking of too much time on my hands. Here are two flyovers. I've marked the Stoneleigh with the pars and yardages I found somewhere online. I forget which color tees they were. I haven't annotated the Springfield, but might do that later.

Dave, Excellent write-up on how to play Stoneleigh.

Springfield has no such blind shots on any hole, everything you see is right in front of you.  I could do a write-up but the only thing you need to be aware of is don't be above the hole on any hole and especially 8 & 12.  And the greens right now are extremely firm, so it doesn't serve you well to fire at many pins, unless you have a short iron in your hands.

Thanks, Dave did yesterday. Read through the front nine and I was out of breath reading up and down through the elevation changes and climbing over stone walls already... ha ha.

Seems like a 'thinkers' course. In short, I will probably be SOL. Can't wait.

Springfield seems a bit more straightforward from your description. What is it's defense?

The greens.......They are extremely fast and firm.  It's very hard to get up and down, on most holes, if you are long.    In fact on 8 & 12 if you are above the hole, a two putt is not a given and if you're over the green, almost impossible to keep it on the green.  So you need you best short game to score well at Springfield.  So the theme at Springfield is "Don't Be Long!"

Stoneleigh and Springfield are definitely different courses.  It took me a couple of times of playing Stoneleigh to get he hang of the course.  I got Dave's write-up and it is basically how I play the course.

I can do a write-up as well if anyone wants it.

What's the format going to be?  In the SoCal outings we used to do modified stableford based on HCP.  Each group is a team, and you count two or three scores for each hole.

Or we could just play, and those that want can kick in five bucks for skins.

We do this in our Sunday league. Works well. We could do a rotating number of scores counted for each hole.

Hole 1 - all 4 net scores

hole 2 - 3 top net scores

hole 3 - 2 top net scores

hole 4 - single best net score

hole  5 - repeat from top..

That way everybody has to contribute at least some what.

:-D

You just keep the gross scores during the round which we would in the least anyway. Math can be done after the round assuming everybody will hang around at least 10 mins after. Also prep the cards with HCP based stroke allocations before you tee off. Not that complicated. But sure, the simpler verson, top 2 or top 3 all along works just fine too.

I will volunteer to do the math for all the groups after the round if that helps. Anyway, it's just ONE suggestion. I am sure few others will roll in. I will agree to this, keeping it simpler will help enjoy the round more. I suggest $5/person/round.

Our match is two gross scores per hole ( if everyone is similar in handicap) or one gross and one net.

If I remember right, our handicaps will range from 3 or 4 up to about 18 or 19.  Given the range, I think we should play net rather than gross.  If someone doesn't have an official handicap, I think we can trust their best estimate, its not like we're trying to get rich off one another.

We'll have 10 players on Saturday, but its probably not fair to try to take money from @davechen's son, so we'll have 3 3-somes for competition purposes.   I think taking two nets on each hole would work out.  We could play $5 a man for total score, or do a 3-way $1 nassau (maximum exposure of $6).  We do round-robin nassaus in our weekend games with multiple groups, and reading the cards off at the end is a big part of the fun.

Sunday we'll have 6, we can do something similar.

How does that sound?

Dave

    • Ooh, I don't know about that. I've hit flop shots that are 6-7° down. The more you widen the spin loft the less ball speed you put into the ball.

    • Can't brag about a 50 last night but it was the best round of my season (4 rounds of 9 holes) so I am not as upset as I could be.  One thing I am noticed is that I got a little more confident in my long hybrids and I attempted a couple longer shots that typically I would just lay up and those holes were a big part of the lower score.  Not every shot was great but good enough that they helped.  I even shot par on a Par 5 after taking a drop.  On that hole I would usually lay-up to @ 100 yards and often miss the green altogether with my 3rd shot (or worse chunk my approach and put it in the waste area).  Yesterday I went for it from @ 200 yards out with wind in my face and landed in the waste area short of the green.  My drop left @ 40 yards in and I stuck it to 3 feet for my par putt.  If I had laid up I would have avoided the penalty stroke but likely would not have been on the green in regulation and may still have been working for par.  By going for it I gave myself a chance at birdie and still saved par. I do not plan on being crazy aggressive but I think I tend to be too conservative at times so I will "go for it" a little more often going forward.
    • Day 14 (15 May 24) - Worked with the SW in the backyard, short pitches from 10yds up to 30yds.   Focused on ball placement in stance - ball back, ball forward, ball center.  Afterwards moved to inside the shop to work on putting pace on the rug - putting one way gives about an 8' putt, going the other a 6' before bumping onto the adjacent rug.  Focused there on the line - picking a target point about 18"-24" out and making sure the ball rolls through that point.
