hey Guys, I just moved into NYC and am finding it particularly difficult to practice. Chelsea Piers is always packed. Randalls Island is a pain to get to. I'd like to be able to practice somehow in my apartment as I do have enough space to make a full swing. I was thinking of hitting foam balls of a small mat, but was looking for super soft foam balls, but only found the more solid type. I saw one of those "Pure Path Swing Feedback" gizmos, where you stick it in the ground and it's a ball on a string, but obviously can't use that as it's inside an apartment. I really want to be able to practice often and would love to find a way to do this in my apartment. Anybody do anything or have any ideas for things I can do/use?? Thanks!

  • If you have a bike, you can ride to Randall's Island. Entrance to path to bridge is on 84th street.
  • Maybe there's space in a high ceiling room in the basement, a garden in the back or maybe even the rooftop where you could use a net.

It really depends what you're to practice and achieve within the given spacee but body shape, positions, swing planes and various chipping techniques should all be achievable even if you have to use communal hallways

I use one of these in my garden :-)

Was a lot cheaper when I got mine though. Can plug it into a laptop and play Tiger Woods or use the launchpad software which tracks swing path, speed, but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

I just use it as a mat to hit off  :-)

Keeps21 that thing is hilarious. My wife bought me a dumbed down version of that for christmas one yr. Lol Anyway, i work on a ship offshore and I always bring a LW w me and a mat. I mostly work on positions and pitch and chip swing. Mirror work in the head is a must before I head back to the bridge too haha

Subscribing to this thread. I'd also like tips for practice in more confined spaces. :)

I got some cheapo clubs to hit outside that I'm not afraid of damaging. That way I can practice full powerful swings and get a little strength training (golfwise) going. You could put some cardboard down in an alleyway and try the same, but that might be a little too redneck for NYC. :P

Here's some SS drills from 2:11 to 9:40 you could probably do in the apt, a park, the roof...or the alley.

just opened a beautiful links course under the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City.   Probably could find cheap public transportation to get close to there ... and it only costs $24 to play.   Ridiculously good deal ...

Off topic but weekend peak rate for non residents is ~$40. The rate above is super twilight. I didn't bother checking for public transportation options, you basically need a car, not a great neighborhood either.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
