  1. 1. What Major Championship Would You Most Like to Win?

    • The Masters (on CBS)

    • The US Open (if you're not already dead)
      18
    • The Open Championship (it deserves to be called by its proper title)

    • The PGA Championship (anyone who selects this is an idiot)

What major championship would you most like to win, and WHY?

I say the Open Championship (British Open). It is the oldest and in my opinion the most prestigious of the four majors. It possesses a certain charm and quirkiness due to its being played linkside courses. Although the Open Championship might not have the highest quality of champions (for many years, most Americans did not play), it still has the greatest amount of history, the greatest prize in golf (the Claret jug), and the greatesr galleries in the game. I get chills every time I hear, "The winner of the gold medal, and the champion golfer of the year, is..."

Now let's hear what everyone else has to say.

I voted for the US Open with it being our nations toughest and most prestigious tournament. It is also the toughest one there is. Tiny fairways, excruciating rough, rock hard greens, and ice-like putting surfaces are brutal on a golfer. That's definitely my favorite major.

While I would most like to win the Masters (hey, I'd like to be good enough to be invited ), I do would like to discuss the parenthesis after the PGA Championship. which imply that anyone who wants to win that one the most is an idiot.

First of all, I believe there are club pros on this list. That major probably means a great deal to them. I don't doubt that they've tried out for the U.S. Open, and club pros have won other majors, but the PGA Championship is still their organization's major.

I also seem to recall that it was a major that Arnold Palmer wanted desperately to win, although he never did. Not only would it have completed his career major list (he won the other three at least once each), but his father was a club pro.

When you're conducting a poll, it's generally a good idea to avoid trying to influence the results with the phrasing of the question.

The Masters for me. It has always been my favorite tournament. The entire aura around it is just special. And hey, a lifetime membership at Augusta so I could bring my Dad, Grandpa and brother there to play after I won would round out my ultimate foursome on a dream of a course.

I am in complete agreement with you. I tried to think of a more appropiate parathetical statement for the PGA Championship, but I was unable to do so. In retrospect I realize that my statement, in addition to skewing the results of the poll, might upset a large number of people; I apologize to you and anyone else I might have offended.

If an administrator could take down the parenthetical labels in the poll, I would greater appreciate it. Thank you.

BUT what's nice about the PGA. . .

After a season of "well we thought if we planted a few extra trees, and moved back the tees" at THE MASTERS . . .

. . . and "we thought an 8 inch rough plus 13-stimp-elevated-island-mound-greens really were the perfect accouterments to our 8 yard wide fairways" at the US Open. . .

. . . and "the rock hard fairways ARE challenging to hit in a 45kph wind. . .and yes we ARE considering implementing moving pot bunkers" at the Open

Its nice that they have a tendency to let the players play on a course they can dominate at the PGA. Its good for variety!

The only thing more fun than watching Tour pros whine about tough course conditions in the first 3 majors is watching them finish 20 under in the last one.

I voted for U.S. Open. It's our national open.

The second on my list would be the British Open, because it's played on great golf courses.

Third would be the Masters simply because I could go back and play for as long as I'd like.

The PGA would be last, not because it sucks, but because one of them has to be last.

Masters, US Open, British Open, and PGA. In that order. Echoing what iacas said, something has to be last. Although I'd take any of them.

I went US Open. I think it's the purest test of golf. Hard golf and a hard course in hard conditions. Plus I think it suits my game the best. I don't go terribly low, but I can certainly make pars all day.

I voted for U.S. Open. It's our national open.

Well said about the PGA. I, and every pro never to win a major, would love to win it. I doubt anyone would say no thank you, I would have to be an idiot to accept that trophy.

I chose the Masters because of the "lifetime" invite. I also like the fact that it includes a membership to Augusta. The US Open would be second and the British would be third.

The US Open is my number one because in my view it is the hardest test of golf by nature of the course and setup.

The Open Championship (British) is my second because it has the toughest conditions as far as the weather and wind. The courses are natural links layouts which has rich tradition.

The Masters is third for me. I love the tradition and the course, especially the greens. The conditions are always perfect and the foliage is brilliant.

The PGA is last only because it is competing against the first three. On a good note, it does beat the Fed-Ex Cup which seems to be trying to eak out a place in the major world. I don't think that golf is ready for that.
