does anybody use driving irons. i was thinking on getting one to make at home from hireko golf but dont know if they are any good. if you want to see it i will post a link. oh yeah i was gonna get an 18 degree. the reason i was thinking about gettin one is because i slice my hybrids really bad. http://www.hirekogolf.com/golf-components/clubheads/golf-hybrids/dynacraft-driving-iron-clubhead.html

A player needs good ball-striking and fairly good clubhead speed to make a driving iron work.

Since you're just starting out, slicing hybrids may be a swing flaw, or it could indicate too stiff a shaft. Compared to a driving iron, hybrids should be easier to hit.

Have someone check out your hybrid swing, or maybe post it to the Member Swings forum.

If you hit your long irons good, I think they're worth a shot.

Hybrids can fly pretty dang far though, especially an 18. So it's also worth trying to fix (or fade) that slice!

For what it's worth, my uncle (just a weekend golfer, nothing too fancy at all) still carries everything down to the 1 iron. Can't use his driver or fairway woods to save his life, but seems to just absolutely clobber all sorts of irons dead straight. His 1 iron won't beat out a good actual driver, but it certainly beats my 1 iron, lol.

My brother mastered the 2i about age 14, and still hits it well. When we play a scramble, he'll help us out with a low draw approach into the wind on a long par 4, or a snappy tee shot on a tight hole.

He never breaks 90, but he really blasts that 2i.

I'm guessing that a gorilla with a putter could beat my 1-iron.

This was exactly my experience. I had two driving irons last year but could not hit them well because I did not have enough clubhead speed.

I have an old Controller driving iron that I will break out on occasion. 12.5 degrees of loft. Certainly not a stroke saver but the feeling of hitting a low missile into a strong breeze is enough to dig it out of the basement once in a while.

Well, today's 4 irons loft about the same as the 2 irons of yesterday (way yesterday). So for my "driving iron" I just bought a 4 iron.

I just got a 21* Mizuno Fli Hi 3I driving iron off Ebay.  I thought it would go a little higher....maybe its the Dynamic Gold shaft that keeps the flight down.  I am thinking of taking the PX 6.0 flighted shaft out of my MP-67 3 Iron.  Does this sound like a good idea to anybody if I wanted to get the flight up just a little bit.  I am guessing its a DG s300 but in only says dynamic gold.

First of all, congrats on finding a Fli Hi!

For reshafting, consider putting in a graphite, hybrid shaft. The DG steel shafts are build for low launch. Many Fli-Hi came from factory with Graphite Design YS-series shafts.

(Measure current shaft diameter first; I suspect it's a .370" diameter hosel.)

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
