Hey all,

Im relatively new to the game and not suprisingly am having some issues with my driver. As I understand with the driver you want to be hitting the ball with the club going upward in comparison to irons which you hit on the downswing. My problem is that I seem to only be able to either hit the driver coming in-to-out but clipping the ball so that it goes straight with little to no distance or I hit the ball on the upswing but its out-to-in causing a horrible slice. I guess my question is what can I do in my swing to help promote an in to out swing that wont cause me to top the ball with my driver.

Thanks!

Lots of great information in there specifically addressing your issue.

If I read your post correctly, try teeing the ball up higher. That's the first fix I would try. Perhaps moving the ball back in your stance could help. These will help, assuming you have no other problems in your swing.

What I would suggest is that you read up on the various reasons that cause a topped shot. Once the problem is fully understood, the golfer can apply their own fix.

When I top a shot it's usually because I am doing something that is causing me to raise my shoulders up just prior to impact. When I raise my shoulders, the clubhead also raises up, which puts the bottom of the clubhead nearer to the top of the ball than it should be. There are other reasons for topping a shot, but that's my main topping issue. My normal cause for raising my shoulders is leaving too much weight on my rear foot during the downswing.

The iron swing and the driver swing are very similar, biggest differences are in the set-up to help the golfer achieve a positive angle of attack. If you're topping it, you're probably swaying back on the backswing or not getting your weight forward enough on the downswing. Doing those piece properly helps you swing out.

Six months ago I couldn't even hit a driver. Now it's probably favorite club. Mike's link has a great driver set up. Follow the instructions, and you'll be fine.

But this is not a magic cure. You still have to practice hitting the driver and get used to the feel and get confident with the club. I pick a target down range like a center pole at the driving range, and then there are poles about 15 yds apart. I try to keep my shot within one pole to either side. This isn't easy, but you'll get better at it with time.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
