Can Jason Day compete in the Ryder Cup for the US?

Jason Day is married to a US Citizen and lives in the US. One would assume he's either already a dual citizen or in the process of becoming a dual citizen. If/when he becomes a citizen playing in the president's cup would be a conflict but the Ryder Cup should be open game right?

Mmm, won't happen but nice try though! However you can have Geoff Ogilvy, he lives in the US too...

Probably half of the European side are naturalized US citizens for tax reasons (and the other half will be). It's because you guys don't pay any taxes, or have a social security system and look after the poor like we do in Europe. Most pro golfers, like most millionaires, seem to become Republicans as soon as they buy their first home.

Wow, I don't know where to start with this one, but I won't bother. Something tells me it won't do any good...

US team not strong enough then?

We have 5 of the top 10 and 26 of the top 50 and the best amatuer. I think we'll be alright. But Day has clearly taken a liking to American culture. A huge american football fan, married a country girl. Wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to play for us in the Ryder Cup regardless of what the old article above says...

Are you for real?

It would be the most surprising and shocking thing in golf in a century.

It will not happen.

I think your comment would surprise him ;-)

You're vastly overestimating the power and influence of US cultural hegemony. I'm American and I'd boo Jason Day if he plays for the US in the RC. And I'd bet his caddy would Nancy Kerrigan him w/a 9 iron if he even seriously entertained the thought. The cumulative laser death stares from Australia alone would zap him away before he leaves the first tee.

It's incredibly unlikely that he'd ever play on the US Ryder Cup team even if eligible but if he did I sure as hell would root for him. I can't believe you'd boo him if you are a US citizen. You'd root against your own team?

No. It is 100% not going to happen. It is not any degree of "unlikely". :-D

I meant it figuratively, trying to be a mix of rhetorical and amusing and falling flat on my face. Bleh.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
