What'd You Shoot Today?

This past Sunday, I shot my personal best round of 104. I've only started playing about a year ago and had been between 125-135. The biggest difference is that I had much better control of my anger and made a conscious effort to keep my head down through the swing.

I played Vellano Country Club in Chino Hills today for the first time.
I shot an 82 that included two doubles and an Eagle-2. It was my second Eagle-2 in 4 days. Very unusual.

I snuck out Sunday afternoon at 12:30 and shot an 82 at Sumner Meadows. A miracle that I finished after it took over 3 hours to play the front 9...

I shot a 91 at Woodley Lakes this morning. Here's the kicker.

When I was threatening to break 100, I'd frequently have a round where I hit X tee shots O.B. and went to "hitting three" from the tee. I'd have a score in the range of [100, 99 + 2X]. In other words, if I had said "mulligan," I'd have broken 100, but instead I followed the rules, called a penalty on myself, and didn't break 100.

Well, now scores in the 90s at my home course are the norm. And today, I shot a 91. But the kicker is that I made a really stupid mistake in the process.

Hole 2, I hit my approach into a bunker after going for a sucker pin. The thing is, my course notebook even tells me not to go for the pin when it's in that position! I wrote that book for a reason dang-it!
I leave my sand shot in the bunker. Well, after a bad shot, what do you do? Take a practice swing for what you should have done. Oops! My ball's still in the bunker - two stroke penalty.
I got my ball up and down for a triple bogey.

If I hadn't called that penalty on myself, the score would've been 89. So now I know I'm fully capable of breaking 90, I just need to go out and do it.

Another plus today: I parred holes 6 and 14, neither of which I had parred in the past. I've now parred every hole on the course at least once, and I've birdied 4 holes at least once each. This brings my best-ball score for the course to 68.
After parring 14, I told my group this and then said "I don't care if I triple bogey out, I've had a good day." And I made a triple on the next hole and then a double on 16. A nice par save on 17 from 75 yards out and a tap-in bogey on 18 finished the day.

The lesson: honesty is important when you make a mistake, but it's better not to make the mistake in the first place. Also, stop talking about your score during the round.

Only second time playing since last summer (played once in January when it was really warm). Shot a solid 39 (par 36) on the front nine of my home course. We were still hitting off temporary tee boxes, and I hit a very solid first tee shot (3 wood about 275). It was a great start too the round. Left me with about a 25 yard pitch shot, and I of course duffed it. I just got a new 54.10 spin milled vokey, and after hitting a bad 60 degree wedge I decided to use the vokey on every shot shot from there on out. That worked out like a charm. Too bad I drove the ball poorly and I couldn't hit a good iron shot to save my life.

Overall 4 fairways hit, only 3 GIR, but only 15 putts.

If anyone is wondering how to get spin on their wedges, get a vokey. The course I played on was quite wet, but I was still generating more spin that I could imagine. On #8 I hit a half shot (about 60 yards) and it spun back 18 feet (this was with an old pro v1 ball). What was even better was that on #7, I flew the green, and with a downhill 20 yard shot I spun back a top flite. I could not believe it.

42 on the front side of Pioneer after ESC. I had about a 20 (ESC 7) on one hole because I couldn't keep a ball in bounds, but apart from that one brain fart, I might still have my game.

First rd of the year

Front 9: 50
Back 9: 38

Had some lead time on the front getting used to some new clubs. Everything worked out on the back as you can see. This is my first year getting serious with golf so I dont see how shooting in the 30's for 9 cant become commonplace.

Shot 82, net 70, tournament at Gold Mountain, Cascade course, 5 over my goal. I'd have to say it's very difficult to be grouped with slow and angry players. Got caught up with it in the middle of the round but I concentrated on my game and did fine. I did 3 putt 4 holes so I'll need to work on that. I did tie for 2nd place and got long drive. Got back 4 bucks more than what I put in, enough for a beer.

80. Two double bogeys. Three three-putts. It's killing me because I drove the ball fairly well today. Better than I had been. Greens were aerated monday but I don't use that as an excuse. Just had mental lapses. Guess that's why I'm an amateur.

40 for nine holes

1st day for highschool tryouts, second time playing the course.

Major flaw; chunked driver shot into the trees on a par five and got a double bogey

But as a freshmen only 3 people got me today, 2 seniors and a junior. So my chances of being a starter are pretty good.

    • Ok, that makes sense. I was trying to wrap my head around that concept when I was writing my post.
    • 78 today at Minnesott (36 front / 42 back) - a new first with an even par on the front.  A big day of up and downs for par.  Only 26 putts against 4 GIR and 5 nGIR.  Was a CPO (cart path only) day due to recent rains.  Overall game was on - until 18 where I was looking at having a first “no-sixes” and made a triple 7 (tee shot in the lake, 2nd tee in fairway, shot 4 approach to right of green pin high, shot 5 bogie on the green, long two putts for triple 7.  Still a solid round and new personal best.
    • I believe that 76 bpms is the tour average (or somewhere around that). I think that's from taking it back to impact. I'm not 100% sure of exactly how it works since a typical pendulum is already moving when it starts going back. The putter on the throughswing ideally would work pretty much exactly like a pendulum though. To get the exact same time period from starting the putter back to impact, you'll have to accelerate it a lot faster on a longer putt right at the beginning until it gets to the speed it needs to be to make the putter move the right distance. Probably all way too much to think about while actually hitting a putt, but bottom line is I agree entirely that a metronome is a good thing to use if you're working on your putting tempo. As to the split between backstroke and downstroke, the tour tempo lot said 2:1 is the ideal. 3:1 for full swing. 2:1 for short game and putting. Whenever I go on a SAM I am about 1.7:1 I think and I can't for the life of me get my backstroke to be slow enough to get it to 2:1. Ho hum. Last comment - if you do have a perfect pendulum putting stroke and you have the ball slightly forward of the center of your stance, then the putter should be just starting to rise again at impact and with the way that pendulum motion works, it should be very slightly decelerating at impact, which I believe someone may have suggested once 😛
    • Was going to chime in on Erik’s videos - they were and are solid teaching on better putting.
    • I'm a big fan of the metronome. I forget what my actual numbers were, but something like 0.59 seconds: my backswings, regardless of the length of the putt, is 0.59 seconds (or 0.72 or whatever the actual number was). The period of a pendulum is determined by the length of the pendulum. So, to hit a putt harder, you take it back farther… in the same amount of time. So you have to swing it faster, and thus, it comes through faster. The putter head has to travel faster to travel farther in the same amount of time. Everyone tends to have a "beat" that they like. For some it's slower, and they have to make bigger backswings to make a putt go the same distance as someone like Brandt Snedeker. It also has a metronome IIRC. 😄
