What'd You Shoot Today?

cool weather, high winds, soggy ground preventing people from using carts, a perfect Saturday for golfing on a nearly empty course

at my home course The Lake of the Woods, with the front 9 greens aerated

#1: 3w splits the fairway and goes over 200 yards. I attempt a 5w but scuffle it along the ground. 9i approach is thinned over the back. The chip winds up 16 feet short and the putt for bogey just misses.

#2: I try to take adventage of the wind behind me with a high 3w, but naturally pop it up into the lake. 5i into the left rough and a sw is hit very low and long. I'm in casual water, but if I take relief to the nearest spot, I'm behind a tree. I play it as it lies and splash it to 22 feet from the hole. Even better, I didn't get wet. The putt is short and it's a spiffy little 7.

#3: 3w is right, but stays in bounds this time. 4i to the left rough is follwed by a 5i over the back of the green. It's a nice chip to 6 feet, but the par putt is missed on the high side.

#4: We're into a gale and they put the tees back??? 7i is hit very well, but just short. The chip hits the upslope and is left 19 feet short. 2 putts nets me a bogey.

#5: 3w is hit right down the middle and a pw from 115 up the hill gives me a 13 foot downhill slider for my first birdie of the year. It misses and I settle for a tap in par.

#6: Driver into the wind finds the right rough, a 4i finds it's way through the trees and another one leaves me short and left of the greenside bunker. It's a sad chip that just gets over the bunker. The next chip is 9 feet from the pin and I make that for a bogey.

#7: 4i off the tee clears the lake and hooks into the trees. I attempt to play over the bunker at the dogleg's corner, but it splashes into it. After taking relief, my bunker shot it bladed over the green. The fourth shot is too long to the front pin. However, the 15 foot chip for bogey is in the hole! One drive + 4 chips (of a sort) = 5

#8: 9i is pin high but about 45 feet right and in the rough. This chip is to 3 feet and I amke that for par.

#9: Wind is bewhind me now and the 3w up the hill finds that fairway and leaves me about 160 yards to the front pin. 7i is hit very well, but over the back. My tihrd good chip in a row is two feet away and I get a par.

front 9: 45, I'm not sure how I did it either

#10: 3w hit down the right side of the fairway and a downhill sw finds the green! A 19 foor birdie putt slides by again and it's my third par in a row.

#11: Driver into the right woods, but the punch out is good. 5i approach into the wind is 50 yards short of the hole. I try hitting a high shot, but the wind drops and I'm just over the green. The chip is inside a foot and I tap in for a six.

#12: 3w down the left side and just into the rough. I'm next to the sprinkler head 280 yards to the pin that gives a yardage of "kill it!" 4i hooks over the right lake and I'm 100 yards to the hole. Sw is 30 feet right of the hole and I two putt for a par.

#13: 3w popped up and the 5w responds by scuffling along the ground again. 9i from 140 downwind is left right of the green. The chip is ten feet long, but I make it for the bogey save.

#14: 7i finds the green 35 feet left of the pin. The birdie putt is charged a little too much and I miss the 7 foot comebacker. bogey

#15: Driver hit straight and long itno the wind 210 yards. 4i leaves me 165 yards to the pin. 5i is hit well right and finds the lake on #7. If it had cleared the lake I would have been blocked by pine trees anyway. Sw is taken well left by the wind. The first putt from 56 feet is left just 7 feet away and I make the uphill putt for a 7.

#16: Driver finds another fairway and a 9i from 142 is leaves me 16 feet below the pin. Another birdie putt misses left and I tap in for par.

#17: A long 200 yarder into the wind and I top the 3w. YAY! The 9i appraoch is hit too well to the back pin and over. The chip is 17 feet long and I get a well deserved 5.

#18: Drive is hit 225 yards right down the middle, perhaps my best ever drive on this hole. I've made this green in two only twice ever. 7i is the right distance, but pulled into the bunker. The blast out is well long to 33 feet. Two putts for a bogey.

45/45=90 Considering the conditions, this was by far my best round of the year. The handicap machine said, "This score is outside your normal range, are you sure you want to post it?"

fairways hit: 8/14, I guess I need a 25 mph wind to find the fairway
GIR: 5/18, second best of the year
GIR +1: 10/18, not good enough
putts: 30, but I had 5 birdie putts and they all missed
2 water balls

Sandbagger!

I put up a smooth 77 today (37/40) at Salinas Fairways. Only my second round of the year and I ran out of gas on the way in. Finished double, bogey, par, bogey, par. Hot, windy and no legs left. Score's fine, but pissed that I played the par 5's +3! Oh well...

shot 13 over today...
got in a round right after the rain let up...
surprised the course wasnt as sopping wet as i thought it would be...
only a few casual water spots... didnt get as muddy as i usually do...
driving was on and off due to the wind... 2nd shots were just horrendous... pushing everything...
putting was meh... had to lag more than a few just to get them close...
2 lost balls... one sliced deep into the woods the other went into the water with an ugly duck hook

75 at Whispering Woods . I didn't line up any putts and just kind of got up there and whacked 'em. I didn't expect to score well, but that's no excuse - I shouldn't get myself in that bad habit. So I won't.

I'm starting to really be able to feel the differences between my good and my bad swings, which helps quite a bit.

+7. Not particularly impressive. 2 of those are penalty strokes and one was a chip-out from a nearly unplayable lie followed by a lay-up on a par-5. But I had 1.66 putts per hole. That's pretty good for me these days and shows that my putting stroke and stance changes are paying off.

40 for 9 holes before a tremendous T-Storm came through and drove us from the course.

On the par 5 9th hole I tried to play hero off the tee and put one in the water which runs across the fairway at about 250 yards. I usually lay up with a 5 wood. Bad course management there.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Horrid round yesterday. 105 on a 69.7/122

5 balls in the water really killed my chance at a first round of the year under 100. Guess next week is the target!

+2 38 on my home course back nine. I was 1 bad drive and a missed put away from shooting under par. I even just missed eagle on the par 4 353, when the 40 yd wedge I had for my 2nd shot lipped out.

I think that's pretty good, since you did about the same as my friend I played with over the weekend, who has played for over 10 years (he shot 110). I managed to score a 133 (Maple Moor course, NY), but it was my first round this year, as a beginner. My worst part of the game was off the tee, and I was only using a 3-wood or 4-wood (irons on the par 3s). My shots kept fading or slicing to the right with the long woods, though I managed to get one 3-wood on the fairway. My swings were inconsistent, perhaps one good swing for every three. Good points of my play were hitting out of the rough (with the hybrids) and making some tough escape shots. My putting was also decent, averaging a 2.5 putt per hole, never over 3. I think if I could get on the fairway more off the tee my score would lower, so will get to work on that next.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

I hit 86. Still looking for players who want to play around Huntington Beach, Long Beach areas.

46 front , 40 Back 9

Hitting my driver way better, but still having some issues with my irons. 10 Fairways today (not bad for me ), but just 5 green in regulation.

My round of 78 on a par 67 followed by a 96 on a par 70. My driver was nowhere near what it was two days ago...

40 on 9. Hit 5-7 FW, 6-9 Greens, 16 Putts. Took a double from 95 yards in the light rough on a Par 4. Boned it over the back of the green, OB very close on that hole, and ended up with a penalty. Other than that, 2 bogeys, 1 birdie and 5 pars.

I'll take it after a horrific 95 last week, first time on a very tough club course.

94... absolutely horrible...
played even through 5 holes and thought this would be the best round of my life... then proceeded to fall apart from there on out... one thing led to another and the scores just kept getting higher and higher... drives started slicing or duck hooking... lost 1 in the woods and 2 in the water... woods were failing me big time... chipping was an adventure... either getting them really fat and leaving them really short... or hitting them thin and running off the back... putting was weird... id 1 putt a par 5 for double... then 5 putt a par 3 for triples... one holes greens played super fast... the next holes green would be super slow... the wind didnt help either

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
