I just shot an 83 on a par 70 course this past Saturday. Ugh. I need to work on my chipping and putting big time. My drives were great and my irons were pretty solid. The short game always gets me and it never stops. I also wish I was playing on bent grass back in WI and not this stuff in MN. It's almost more beneficial to hit it in the rough here.

I shot a 94!! Man it was a long day.

I've been working on my chipping and putting a lot lately because they are usually my downfall but today it was my saving grace. I had some real nice Up & Down saves, plus a few fairly long 1 putts (10-15 feet) that I usually haven't been making.

It was from the T-box to approach that killed me. For some reason I started hooking my driver (I normally have a slight fade), I was hitting my fairway woods left and with top-spin (they would jump about 20yds then dive back to the ground), and I was pulling my irons (not bad but bad enough to miss most of the greens).

So after all of the OB's, hazards and other penalty strokes I think I did pretty good considering.

On a good note, if I can get my long shots back and keep chipping and putting like I did, I might have a record round (73 is my best ever round) coming up soon.

I shot 41-49 ( cough, hack, choke ). Drained a 30 footer for birdie on 10, making me four over with eight holes to play, and I couldn't break 90

Shot 76 Saturday, Hit the tee ball out of bounds twice, once with a three wood once with the driver. Put the pipe back in the bag and putted much better, but didn't make anything of any length. No 3 putts though.

Played the back nine on Sunday. Par on 10, 17 and 18. Bogey on 16 and a bunch of others in between. Not good. Hit the ball reasonably well with the driver and Hybrid off the tee. Didn't do much else right.

I played too much recently to post all the scores, but the basics are this:

I shot mid-80s or just under (like 82-85) every day, including some very weird (SkyView) or very difficult (Bethpage Black) courses. I was dealing with, at any given moment:

1) thin shots and a complete inability to hit my 3W or hybrid (largely due to the thin shots, which were worse the longer the club was except the driver)

2) driver pulls or a draw that suddenly materialized after weeks of hitting small fades

Those two things can kill a round pretty quickly. But in the end, I kind of overcame them and shot an 80 after a disastrous start (involving both of the above) at one of the courses the last day we played.

77 at a great little course I'm writing up for a review soon: a course called "Candywood" near Sharon, PA in Vienna, OH. Lots of birdie chances, but two or three bad mistakes on three separate holes resulted in a double and two of the bogeys.

...played well, blew up with 3 doubles, countered with 6 birdies (and one missed birdie from 2 1/2 feet), shot 74. Driver was deadly long and straight. Until this round, I was driver shopping, and may again after a tourney this weekend.... we'll see.

First night of league. I shot a 38. However, par is only 31. It was good enough for Low Net and Gross for the league. I hit the ball very well, but putted terribly. I had two three putts and a third where I took three shots from two inches into the fringe. The greens on this course are very inconsistent and I left myself on the wrong tier of several greens. Distance control was mediocre at best, but contact was soild. Not bad for the first night of the year. My wife and I took all 6 points.

With a 78, dude, you wouldn't have gone 0-5-1 in our little match.

Or, if you count beating that guy and the assistant pro, 1-5-1. Anyway, I shot the most boring 74 I've ever shot. Two birdies - one front, one back - and two bogeys on each side. A few nice up-and-downs. One of the bogeys on 17 was after an absolutely horrible drive (heeled it 70 yards forward trying to hit the ball as hard as I could). I had a tap-in bogey and nearly made the par putt after pitching out, 3W near the green, and a lob wedge. Still, I think the r7 steel fairway wood is going back in the basement and I'm putting the 904F back in the bag. I've played the last few rounds with the Futura Phantom mallet. Not quite ready to update the sig file just yet though.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
