For years I was very consistent usually shooting within 5 strokes of most of my scores. Today I am very inconsistent and I really don't know why other than I just don't seem to be able to concentrate on playing. The older I get the less I pay attention to my game. But what really matters is that I am outdoors playing a game although not very well lately.

The thing is that shooting for the middle of the green can still result in an errant shot. That's what kills me. I can still push or pull the shot a little

Me, too but I believe it helps over the long run.    I stick to middle most of the time except of on few holes.   The course I play, all  par 3 holes have safe zone (short right).   Hitting to the middle of green for those holes is too risky for me.  For those holes, my shot zone is short right for a sure bogey or better.   This may explain why my par 3 scores are better than that of par 4 & 5.

Seems like it's still better to aim for the middle, especially with a small two way miss?

Not sure if it's a statistical thing, the results seem to be pretty immediate. I think by aiming for the center you can improve your chances of scrambling for par if you miss the green.

The over riding qualifier is that your aim should be based upon your shot zones. For instance, if you have a tendency to pull as a right handed player then aim more right, but the intent is to hit the center of the green by doing so.

that's pretty amazing that you were able to shoot within 5 strokes.

what was your secret? Concentration? Lots of practice?

i'm not being cynical, I want to get to that level of consistency and trying to find the secret to consistency.

someone who shoots in 90's can't be that consistent.

I check out scores that other club members post before I play against a member.  For bogey golfers, I see bigger swings in their scores.   Heck, I've seen it even with players with 10 - 16 range HI.   Also, (in)consistency seems to come and go.

I am consistently inconsistent...   yep that's the best way to say it.

June 30th I shot a 91, my personal best and shot another one the next week. On July 30th, I shot a 116 on the same course that I shot the first 91. This was due to $h@nkitis. I had developed a decent draw but was hitting TOO in to out. I made some adjustments and am MOSTLY sh@nk free but am starting to hit more of a gentle fade. Not the worst thing in the world but I am somewhat of a short hitter and really liked the extra 5 or so yds I was getting with the draw (150 vs 145 7i)

When I get on a roll and play three times a week, I start hitting longer, with a baby draw on the irons and straight drives. When I play once a week or less, I start hitting fat shots, slices sometimes. Maybe if I had been playing for years, I could hold on to good habits, but since I am only in my third year, I need to keep playing to stay consistent.

    • I am listening to 23rd Street.  24 hours a day of cars, trucks, planes, sirens, and neighbors who start lawn mowers at 6:30am. I try to drown it out with 7,600 WAVE music files on a huge USB drive.  Mostly 1950's through 1990's music.
    • Thanks! Evolvr, for sure. My indoors setup is pretty close to ready. I want to add a few more lights as it's a pretty dark place to begin with (old barn). Plan to use my iPhone 14 Pro, 720p 240 FPS. I think I got a tripod somewhere, but I nail everything down so I'll make a small box I can just plop the phone into. That way I know it's always in the same spot and level. How does the setup look in terms of angles and stuff.  I saw that topic and bookmarked it for later. A technique where you want the head to move forward and down? I've been doing that for twenty years! (not on purpose) 😛 Looks fun, I'll certainly try it out. £7000. That's certainly "down the line". What would be a good price? Thanks. I'll probably hold off until at least winter comes and see where we're living at that point. For the next six months I'll combine indoor practice with the range, which helps.
