What would Jack shoot if you put his mind into the body of a golfer who can't break 100?

    • About the same
      9
    • He shoots in the 90's (breaks 100)
      8
    • He shoots in the 80's (breaks 90)
      6
    • Lower than 80

I understand that you've played with a guy that blamed his entire lack of game on his mind but those people are both rare and extreme.

I think that guy is more common than you might think: golfers love to think that they can fix it or get better if they just do some lazy thing. That's why people buy so many training aids. Or buy so many putters. Etc.

So far almost every thread I've seen on this site that discusses this subject has been met with dismissive tones and a thread that basically states that I could put Jack Nicklaus' mind in your body and you'd still suck because the mental game doesn't matter comes across as a complete lack of understanding on the subject.

I'm not dismissing anything. You're simply reading a tone there that isn't present. I simply don't think that the mental game is very important. You disagree. Okay.

I think simply stating that the mental game is a factor but should not be overstated and that there is no substitute for good swing mechanics would be a far more marketable than uh huh and whatever type comments.

I don't know what that means. I'm sharing my opinion. You're sharing yours. I voted that the guy would save about five strokes. I don't think there's any chance he breaks 90 let alone 80 unless he stops after 13 holes or so.

Yes, a good mental game is a factor. IMO, it's a very, very small one.

I think even a 110 shoot knows that for a 150 yard shot he should hit a club that goes around 150 yards. He also know to aim a bit away from hazards. There may be a few brain fart shots or attempts at hero shots that would add strokes that a better strategic mindset would help. But these won't mitigate the fat shots and slices that really add strokes to the score card.
