It's the time of the year where I re-grip my clubs.

I have big hands and I need larger than standard grips.

The damn problem is the Grips that I have been playing only come in standard size in Red (I'm OK with the Grips on the E8's but I'm still going to re-grip all of my clubs)

So should I get some other grip in midsize or get the same grip and build it up...

Anything I need to know about building up the grip? Are there any tricks to installing a new grip on 6 wraps of tape?

What's in Shane's Bag?

1.Use masking tape for the bottom layers. It's a lot easier to work with and you won't waste double sided tape.

2. The grip will have to stretch to fit over the built up shaft so be sure to use plenty of solvent. You don't want to get a grip stuck halfway down.

I have a tough time putting on a grip after more than two wraps ... I'd get the midsize.

Probably be easier to just go midsize if you have to put on 6 layers of tape. Maybe get a couple to try out before you put them on every club.

I use PURE DTX midsize grips with one layer of tape. You can get midsize in red :-)

If you're going with 6 layers of tape, you may be into JUMBO for grip size.

Some golf shops have test grips of different thicknesses mounted on pieces of shaft. Go check for hand fit and then buy a couple of test grips. Try the test grips on the 5i and 8i before doing all you clubs.

I have the Pure DTX and have put as much as 5 layers of tape under them. I've tried the mid-size, but like the tape better. I also have experimented with adding more tape where the right hand index finger is on the grip. The best thing about Pure grips is you can experiment. If you don't like it, change it an put the grip back on.

With more tape, just work the grip on in stages. Once you get the technique, it's easy.

GolfWorks suggests this, especially on wedges to help with choking down on partial shots. (Makes is less likely you'll overrotate right hand on thinner taper of grip.)

I think that's a myth, and I'm going to demonstrate it here shortly.

I think grip size should almost entirely be a function of comfort, and that it has next to nothing to do with how "handsy" you are, or how much you "release" the club.

Right, you can "customize" it any way you want.

Yeah agree, definitely a myth. Size of the grip isn't going to make any noticeable change to the swing.

This has pretty much been my experience. I've used all sizes and tapers at one time or another and my ball flight and my swing never changed. Only thing I've noticed is that my grip would start to creep on the strong side more easily with the jumbo grips.

They're good, again it's all about how it feels to you.

Is there a good non-tapered grip out there or would I need a couple extra wraps where my right hand would go?

Lamkin makes a Justin Rose Non Tapered (or less tapered) grip in the Tour Section - I have them on my wedges - like them - comfy.

I actually thought there were more available but can't find any Golf Pride or Lamkin non-tapered grips, just reduced-tapered.

With the lack of choices, I'd go with a grip you like and just add some layers under the right hand. This grip has a larger diameter on the lower part of the grip.

I've tried the MCCPlus4 and like it a lot. I have long thin fingers and like the feel of more grip under the right hand. I get the same feel with the Pure DTX and extra wraps under the right hand.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
