In order to curb spam, new accounts are limited to five posts in their first 24 hours of membership. After 24 hours have elapsed, the new account has no other restrictions.

If any legitimate (non-spammer) member bumps into this ceiling, please PM either @mvmac or myself (@iacas).

We'll re-assess this shortly (particularly if the Chinese spam dies down…).

Thanks. I was going to ask about how we could curb this.

Well, to be really clear, we already curb this. If you get a "1" out of 4 you get to register normally. If you get a 2 or a 3, your account is held for approval. If you get a 4, you're simply not allowed to register.

I also have a list of IPs (though that's less and less fruitful as spammers are using IPs in Maine, Texas, etc. these days) and a list of disposable email domains that are blocked as well.

It's really not bad. There's a fine line between blocking spammers and making it difficult for legitimate USERS to join.

Could you expand on the bold part?  It has been so long ago since I joined I do not know what those numbers relate to.  Thanks.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

What if we prevented new users from starting new threads for 24 hours rather than limiting their posts?  Most of the spam I've seen is in newly created threads with the topic of their spam.

The problem with that is new members are encouraged to create "Welcome" threads.

Yes but why? It's a rating level of how legitimate the account is.

Just curiosity.  I'm a numbers guy and when I see numbers I like to know what they mean  But no big deal in any case.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Yeah, there's not much insight into how those numbers are derived, but I imagine they likely factor in things like the IP address (whether previously used by a spammer) and other things.

We're slowly building up a list of disposable email domains, but then again it's not a great help because most spammers register for gmail addresses. :-P

I will do everything possible to keep registration pretty open as I don't want to limit anyone from being able to register or having a waiting period for a moderator to manually approve them or anything.

There seems to be a bug with this. A member with several days could still only post five times per day.

    • Interesting that it's no penalty, but then again, I can't imagine someone would purposefully put their foot out there in this situation or one like it.  And then there was the time someone purposefully deflected his own ball during a major, but that's very different too. The only time I can recall a ball I hit hitting another player or their equipment was ages ago -- over a decade and a half ago.  I had a 3' putt for an 89 and someone (a random pairing, not someone I knew) decided it was a good time for goaltending practice.  That wouldn't fall under this rule, though (and it wasn't in a tournament anyway). Thanks for continuing to share these, Dave!  I always find these interesting.
    • Day 51 (29 Apr 26) - Worked with a few of the golf team kids plus my grandson (he’s too young for the team as it’s middle-high school age and he’ll be 10 Sat).  He put on a small hitting clinic (hitting off the same tees as the rest of the boys) - one of the older kids called him a “coach”.  Worked in a few shots for myself - had the light bag: driver, 7w, 4 - 6 - 8 - Pw - Sw (DCI 962’s except the Sw a 981) and Zebra putter….got in some great tee shots, a couple of recovery and an awesome up and down for bogie: 55 yds out, hitting 4th shot due to 2nd getting tangled in limbs - see the window I need to hit for a tight spinner with the Sw - nail it to a postage letter distance from the cup for a tap in bogie….my kind of practice.
    • Day 21, April 29.  Before going to work this morning, I worked in my indoor practice room for 20 minutes.   This was entirely 6-iron shots with the usual step.  Video yesterday showed me that I'm still straightening my trail leg too much (leading to the backswing length issue I've been working to fix), so I focused on not doing that in my rehearsal swings.
    • Exactly correct.   I was absolutely certain about the penalty (none here), but the bit about where they play from can be really confusing the first time you read it.  In my big paper rule book, i used colored highlighters to make it clear.  Good thing I did, at the Cascades there's little to no cell service, so using the rules app on the phone wasnn't possible.
    • Taking a crack it, but looks pretty clear. 11.1  Ball in Motion Accidentally Hits Person or Outside Influence. a. No Penalty to Any Player If a player’s ball in motion accidentally hits any person (including the player) or outside influence: There is no penalty to any player. This is true even if the ball hits the player, the opponent or any other player or any of their caddies or equipment. Reading further down it looks like they have to play the ball as it lies. No replay from the previous spot.
