Hi everybody, I got a scenario for you,

Meet golfer number 1. He is 6 foot 2 inches tall, 17 years old, and weighs in just short of 230.  He played baseball all of his life, but decided golf would be a better game for him.  About a year ago he borrowed a set of irons and started golfing.  He became so solid in his short and medium irons that he felt he could hit them with his eyes closed.  He bought himself a set of clubs, and again worked hard on his irons.  He became proficient with his irons and hybrids. He decided to start working with his driver, and it was really bad.  So he started working almost exclusively on his driver and less on his irons.  His driver became better but not perfect.  He got tired of missing 6 foot putts so he decided to work on his putting skills.  He got pretty good with a driver and a putter, and his irons were still solid.

Well he recently has started having major problems with his irons.  He hits the shorts on the top and the mids fat.  Also, he has formed a pretty major slice in his irons that he never had (even though he had a HUGE slice with his driver at the beginning).  So my question is, what advice would you give this golfer.  Again, he is no pro but is getting better and better.  Any advice for him would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and incase you havent figured this out yet, golfer 1 is me.

Gee... or this could be me, with the exception of he baseball (insert hippie insted of baseball in there for me). Anyway, I am far from anything called a pro, but a couple thing that really helped me to start is using Evolvr swing analysis posting questions here. There are also some good You Tube videos that will help along with the items that Mike already pointed out. This should get you a good start. My next step is to get some in-person lessons after the holidays. So that might be something you want to investigate. One last item... the LSW has a nice technique section throughout the book that helps with most of the issues you mentioned in your post. Lastly.... practice, practice, practice. I hope this helps.

Welcome to golf world, golfer #1.There is probably a correct way and incorrect way to grip a baseball bat,,,golf is the same only more mysterious.

Note: I do not answer direct questions or points raised against my untested and unproven theories, have no history of teaching anyone, and post essentially the same nonsense in everyone's Member Swing threads.

For more specific advice towards your swing I would,
1. Start a My Swing thread here, http://thesandtrap.com/forums/forum/13-member-swings/
2. Following the guidelines here, http://thesandtrap.com/forums/forum/13-member-swings/#elForumRules

Generally hitting fat and thin shots are from lack of Keys #1 and #2.

Welcome Golfer #1.

Although you are no longer anonymous by outing yourself as Golfer #1, you've admitted defeat as step number 1. The good news is that step number 2 involves hope. The resources here should help you get rolling, and you'll be amazed at all the things you've either been doing wrong or hadn't even thought to consider. That hope will stay with you in golf, even on days where you suck. I played baseball too (as an adult even, not just through high school), and I'll take golf as a hobby over baseball any day now. The last season I played I was thinking by the 8th inning, "geez, I could be on the back 9 now."

    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
