I probably shouldn't be looking on the Internet for golf stuff... But curiosity is an element that bit me here I was looking around at some of the other forums and ran into something called "leading with the right elbow" and "closing the door".... After trying to figure out what the heck they were talking about for awhile... I abandoned the cause after it started to make my head hurt. (Note: posted under golf talk, and not instruction and tips).... But I don't know much about this game anyway. Has anyone heard about this? I know there are a lot of strange teaching techniques out there... Just curious, since I couldn't figure it out.

The "closing the door" comes from people advocating releasing the club. People should feel or should actually open the club on the backswing and close it going into impact.

The club will naturally release if you do other things well.

The right elbow thing looks to be more of a feel. Sometimes golfers focus on one area of the body to get something to work. Like, I like to feel like my right side and right hip gets past the ball sooner in the swing. It doesn't happen, but it helps me get better turn rates.

Hard to say without reading the source material. Could be a feel to help develope more pitch elbow. Generally speaking, when viewed DTL at A5, you want your trail (right for a righty) elbow lower that your lead elbow. This helps shallow the club and keep you swinging outwards.

Here is a video of a guy, Monte Scheinblum, who advocates leading with the right elbow. A lot of golfers swear by this guy.

Ah,yes. That's it. Thiese are a couple interesting videos. I am going to try out the thoughts in that first video... I think that might help me with my problem of an early extension and not keeping a bent elbow up through impact. Thanks for sharing that.

Erik mentioned something in an article about finding the root cause of an issue... This might just be my root cause that I haven't thought about.

You're working with evolvr, yes, Dave?

Seems to me guessing that this "might just be my root cause" and that you're going to "try out the… video" is not the way to go. Trust in what you're doing with evolvr or cancel the service.

You can't go around hunting for your own solutions. You've got a great instructor helping you right now, already.

Ok, Erik. That makes sense. I'll stay with what my Evolvr coach is directing. I was trying to stay with the same concepts (not chasing something different or a different voice)... just looking for supplemental help to what my swing coach has been saying to me already. I just have been running into a mental block with my right elbow. But thanks for the direction... I will do as you stay on the same road with Evolvr. I'm trying to be a good student of the game.

Ah, yes, the right elbow stuff.

Not to get off topic, but just make yourself DO IT. I don't care if the ball goes ten feet. Just do it, then slowly work up the speed until you can do it faster and faster. Slowly. Work. Up. The. Speed.

Ok, gotcha. I will do that. Thanks for the advice. I appreciate you keeping me on the straight and narrow. Much thanks!

I didn't want to offer any technical advice, because I'm not a very technical guy.  What I will do is to point out that you were right in the very first sentence of your post here.

Good luck, keep practicing the right things the right way, and you'll make progress.

Thanks, Dave. Yeah, I agree.... I am always my worst enemy with overthinking everything... and looking for that magic bullet. ;-)

We all do it. I've struggled with tinkering with my swing for years and it really held me back. It wasn't until I just decided to become a "stupid monkey" (not sure that terms is used here anymore) that I started making "real" progress. It's slow, but it takes time to ingrain real change.

It's still used here. We're just waiting on the new awards system to come out of beta. :-)

Yes, I remember reading about the stupid monkey and completely agree. My monkey wants to wander off the plantation once in awhile. Just need to spank him and throw him back in the cage. Back on track guys. :-)

That is the great thing that I love about TST..... you not only get encouragement and instruction... but realignment when its needed. Thanks!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
