I came across a course selling off their old short game area 2015 ProV1's at the rate of $100 for 150. They are in good shape, equivalent to if you played 1 round with them previously. Is this a good deal for used balls?

That is definitely a good deal. Never seen used ProV1's in decent condition for less than 75 cents.

Not saying you should buy them, that's up to you (I would).

Yes, it's really good.

I realize these aren't nearly as expensive as ProV1's, but I recently came across a deal at our local Meijer (supermarket chain) selling 36ct bags of DT Solos - marked down from $26 to $6. I think it was a mistake. I picked up 4 bags of the Titleist and another bag of the Calloways. I left a couple bags on the shelf because I felt guilty taking them all.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread. I just enjoy getting good deals on anything golf related.

Great deal. I used to buy used ProV1x's at more than double that price.

That's a great price, snap em up. I think I'm sitting on 7 dozen prov1x and six dozen prov1 of varying degrees of pristineness but I just collect them for if anyone says they play them and can give them to those people as they are not for me. Fun Easter egg hunting for golf balls at dusk when live on a course. Probably have over 700 balls of all types. I was em up and bag them in sets of a dozen.

After finishing my round this afternoon I went back to the clubhouse, excited to make the purchase, only to realize I had - in my haste to get out and play before dark - misread the sign. It said $150 for 100 balls, not 150 balls for $100.

I didn't pick them up at that price, mostly because I was disappointed since I thought it was a much better deal. I wonder if I called them up another day and offered cash if they'd give me a better offer (since paying with a card would cost them 1.51% plus $0.10 with my Visa). Still a good enough deal that I'm considering it, to fill up my shag bag and to sell to those I know that like ProV1's but don't like their price.

That's pretty much the market price for ProV1's in that condition.

You can get them for $1 per piece, but were these balls only hit once? Usually, the used play balls are potentially better because they were generally hit once only. I prefer to be able to hand pick them as well.

No, they were hit multiple times I'm pretty sure. They were the balls that they had stocked in the short game area for a while. Not beat up like a range ball, but certainly hit a fair few times. I definitely would've sorted out the ones that were bladed badly and had some nice smiles on them, but at that price the deal is much less appealing.

I'd want to see them, it's more likely a ball will get scuffed up from wedges than irons and woods.  The price isn't great, but at least you can be certain they weren't submerged in a water hazard.

That's true. They weren't in bad shape, going by the ones up near the counter they were selling individually, but they were pretty dirty still. I would've thought they'd run them through the ball washing machine before selling them at least. I saw one or two balls grinning back at me that had clearly been bladed from a bunker or something, but if I sorted those out they would've all been in pretty decent shape it seems.

    • Gotcha. Still surprised those were that slow too, those are usually some of the quicker/nicer maintained greens of the public courses I play.
    • I go every year for Thanksgiving, this year I'll be arriving on 11/15 with 3 buddies.  Conditions have always been pretty good, greens are always near-perfect.  The only downside is that some courses will have overseeded, and they generally keep the fairways pretty wet while the rye gets started.
    • before my home course put millions into maintenance, we had a local rule used by the league that you could improve your lie. The course has dry spots of hard clay, no grass, unfilled divots in the fairway. Since the bunkers filled with rocks and other stuff and never raked, we were allowed to lift and place. The idea was going head to head in matches I want my opponent to have the best lie and shot opportunity. I dont want to win a match because my opponents fairway shot is buried in a divot. Now that the course is well maintained we dont have to rely on that rule as much.
    • "Golf is often called a gentleman's game because of its emphasis on etiquette, sportsmanship, and respect for fellow players and the course. Golfers are expected to adhere to a code of conduct that includes honesty, integrity, and consideration for others on the course." it amazes me for the right number, how quickly people will forget human rights violations, compromise their integrity and virtues all in the name of "growing the sport" (which we know not to be true)
