Hi all,

Just joined the site.   This is my first year really playing golf and I took a really strong liking to it.  I have played about 10 times already this season and went to the driving range a fair amount.  My gear is definitely lacking a bit as they are some old hand me downs.  I don't really want to buy all new clubs at once since they are expensive but I figured little by little I could build a nice set.

I am looking for peoples opinions on which clubs to replace first and some good used club options to look into.   I have no problem buying the top of the line club from 5-10 years ago...   Especially because most of my clubs are from the 60's as of right now :)

My driver and 3 wood are really made of wood and I end up using a friends driver a lot which makes me think I should start here and get the driver or the wood.

My irons are old blades some classic toney pennas.   I know they are an old set and todays irons come in a lot of different styles and types but some people say to stay away from the blade style.   Since I learned on the blade style should I stick with them?

My wedges are the same as my irons   an old pitching and sand wedge

I have a whole bunch of classic putters i've been using an offset head one thats probably from the 80's that's not bad.

You might want to start by checking out some golf shops. Many will have used iron sets, hybrids, drivers etc. Hit some on their monitors/bays and get a feel for different stuff. It will be considerably cheaper than new and a big step up from your present gear.

You don't have to spend much to get something that you might find more playable than 1960s blades.  A quick eBay search found me these for $60.  Add a 21st century driver and maybe your current sand wedge and putter and you're in good shape.

For starters, I strongly suggest you go on ebay and buy a new Adams Speedline Super S 3 Fairway wood. This a a good quality club. They are selling for around $39, but having purchased one myself, I can honestly say it is worth much more. Then get yourself a new Cobra Bio Cell hybrid club on ebay for around $59. Worth every penny and much more. Finally you can get a good used set of Ping irons on ebay for a decent price. After that all you need to do is decide on which driver you want.

Welcome to the forum. As others have suggested, used clubs are a good starting point. If there is a Golfsmith near you, they may have a bunch you can try. If the prices are too high, you can probably find the same clubs on E-bay for a bit less money.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!!     I will look into those irons.     I am going to go to a few places today to try and get a feel for things.    I have been looking at the hot list of the past couple years and it seems like callaway, taylormade, nike, titleist, and cobra seem to be up top of all the lists.    I don't mind spending the extra money on the nicer used set especially if I get a little more life and swing out of them.

This is my other curve ball.   I've learned on all old clubs and I really don't like the hybrid clubs.  I'm much more comfortable with a 3 iron and a 3 wood then a 3 hybrid so I believe I'd like to stick with those style clubs.   I still have a 2 iron and after reading around here a bit I feel better about my inability to work that too well haha.    for irons i was thinking 3-9 or worst case scenario 4-9 since the 3 is kind of phased out to an extent.

You're correct, the three iron has been fazed out, but only because the lofts have been adjusted by the OMs, to get more distance.

Depending on what irons you like and what year they were made, you might want to check out the lofts (you can do that on the OM's web site).

And welcome to TST.

Another place to look for used clubs at good prices is Play It Again Sports. Heck can even trade in old ones towards new ones. I also like Hurricane Golf online  picked up an Adams idea super s 3 hybrid brand new for about 40 or so  they are a legit company

Your title reminded me of the Johnny Cash song. Good luck and welcome to the board.

eBay and used is a good place to start. Look at equipment a year or 2 old you you'll save yourself a lot of money. Someone suggested an Adams Super S 3w. The whole Super S line are solid clubs and you can find great buys on them.

DRIVER- Tour Edge EXS 220
3W- Adams Tight Lies 2
Hybrids- Cobra F8 19 *

Utility- Sub 70 699U #4
Irons - Sub 70 739 5-PW
Wedges- Tour Edge CB Pro 50, 54, 58
Putter- Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft #11

Ball- Titleist DT Trufeel

I came across a guy selling a one year old callaway big bertha 3 wood and driver.  He said he'd give me both for 80 bucks.  Are these good clubs?  Does that seem like a good deal?

I just sold my Callaway Big Bertha 3 wood that I recently purchased brand new. It just didn't perform as I expected. Glad it's gone.

Any experience with the driver?

No, but a golfer I know bought the Big Bertha Driver and said he wasn't impressed by it so he sold it I bought something different.

I ended up picking up the clubs... too good a deal to pass up..   That being said I love the clubs so it went well....    my current bag looks like this.

Callaway Big Bertha Driver

Callaway Big Bertha 3 Wood

Tony Penna 2-9, PW, and SW

Triumph putter?  Older putter I believe its brass to be honest.

I don't know what to attack next..    Any suggestions are welcome.  Obviously I don't need a driver or 3 wood anymore.  Also as I mentioned before I don't want any hypbrids.   I enjoy swinging the irons and never had a hybrid so I have no problem sticking with the irons.

Just thinking about this. If a golfer buys clubs one at a time, and their swing weights are different, will this be a problem for the golfer?

I dont know, but just asking.

In My Bag:
A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
