Is this just a Stanford uniform thing or do other teams do this?

Haha, you're right, that's horrible.  I've never seen it and have watched a bit of college golf in my time.

I think it looks fine.

Why not?

The PGA Junior League does it: http://www.pgajlg.com/format

Looks better with the number on the back. I guess it's functional too for coaches to keep track.

I see no issue of the numbers are on the back or front, but are you sure the Stanford one doesn't have numbers on the back too?

Can you elaborate why collared shirts with numbers isn't a good look though?  I don't get it.

I actually kind of like it. Soccer and rugby players sometimes wear collared shirts, and they have numbers on them.

Good point, my soccer jersey in HS always had a collar.

I don't think that's a worry for Stanford.

Kids like the #s because you associate it with being part of a team.

It's just incongruous.  Collared shirts should never have numbers and golfers shouldn't either.

There are 5 golfers playing in a college tourney. There are no subs, no refs keeping track of who is hitting each shot.  The player is the player.

Plus, I wear those shirts to work.  If they start becoming an athletic jersey, it won't fit the business-casual model.  Stop it here and now.

That's your opinion.

So? What if they like it?

My college team wanted to get something similar. Were it not for the lateness of their request (our NCAA Nationals is in a week), I'd have gotten them numbered polos.

I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find polos without numbers.

Never saw an argument for it bud. Of course it's my opinion, as it is yours.  Gimme something, I'm not unreasonable.  A Polo with a number on it is goofy, period.

It's different, but I don't think it's ugly or goofy.  The numbers are odd (I assume some are even too :P) just because they don't seem to serve a purpose.  But whatever ... If the kids dig it, then good for them.  I DO like the idea of polos that are a little more jersey-like with the name bigger like that instead of the tiny logo like the football coaches wear.

Overall, kinda neutral in general.

I think the concept is fine.

The PGA Junior versions in that photo look a bit busy to me, with the large numbers and too many words.  I don't really like the Stanford "gradient".

In the world of numbered polos, I think something like this is perfect (older version of the PGAJL):

OK, I see all your points. Yes, part of a team, looks fine. Maybe even if you're playing single. Big lettering on clothing is just not my cup of tea, that's totally subjective. If you're constantly bombarded with ads in your face in your daily life, it stands that logos and labelling could be a turn off to those in such environments.

I agree, rugby shirts have had numbers and collars on them for a long time so it's not like this is trend shattering.  It's a different look but if I was on a college golf team, I'd wear them, at 50 years old, not so much.

    • Day 5 - 2024-10-05 Hit some somewhat soft pitching wedges. The outside and inside, particularly the outside of the left thumb where my right hand goes on it, is still pretty sore. I don't think I'll do more damage, but I'm reluctant to do too much because I don't want to compensate or alter my motion.
    • Day 156 (05 Sep 24) - Played new to me course today, it’s near our beach place and have been wanting to play it for a couple of years now.  It’s a neat Par 70 that plays just over 6k from the tips, played the whites 5,500 +/-.  Tight fairways and severely undulating greens made for some great shot strategy.  Wound up with an even 80 that included two lost ball penalties.  Putter was solid - 28 total.  Wedge play kept the pars happening - 6 of the 9 pars were up and downs.  Not bad for the first time on a new course.
