I would like to purchase a Nike pro combo or an equivalent in another brand!  Does anyone have any advice please!  I am a 15-20 handicapper! Or should I dare to go for blades!

Hard to determine with the lack of information given...but if you are a high cap, you likely don't have great ball striking skills, right?  You may want to go with GI irons....He11, I'm an 8 and play GI irons.  i wouldn't dare hit blades, life is too short. LOL.

Use the option of the right equipment for your game when you have the option. Try a range of clubs and see how many shots out of ten are solid/straight'ish. Choose the one which helps you to be more consistent.

I upgraded irons recently after about 7 years of using add old set of clubs that was designed in 1999. Bought TM rsi2. The clubs are great, and with this I can hit 8/10 very well. With my old set, it was maybe 4/10.

Blades or not, i suggest you use this criteria .  :) good luck

Look up the Golf Digest website and google "the hot list".  It will give you an idea of game improvement irons and super game improvement irons.  This will give you some idea of whats available.  Then you can buy a used set of irons of off the many sites available on the internet.  Don't forget to go to fitting place and find out if you need anything special.  For example, I'm two degrees upright on my irons and swing regular flex.  Regular flex is kind of an arbitrary thing now as there are always all kinds of shafts out there.  I say buy used and don't buy blades.  One other thing of importance.  If buying used, don't hesitate to regrip the clubs yourself.  Cheap and easy way to make the clubs feel new.

I suggest you not use blades unless . . .

1.  You have lots of distance but you want more control

2.  You want higher spin on your iron shots - more control, better stopping on the greens, better shot shaping, etc.  Related to #1, this higher spin comes at the expense of distance.

3.  You strike it on the sweet spot more often than not.

Like many, I was enamored with blades and how cool they look and how they are supposed to be "for better players" . .but in reality, I hit them about 10 yards shorter even when I nail the sweet spot and if I don't nail the sweet spot, I hit them about 20+ yards shorter.

I even tried to meet myself halfway with a set of Mizuno MP-58's.  I love how they look and feel.  I like the improved feedback they give over my Callaway Big Bertha's . .but I will play better, overall, with the Big Berthas.  I haven't sold off the Mizunos yet but they have not replaced the Big Berthas in my bag, either.

Can be frustrating score wise at first, but if you are just happy making good contact every now and then blades are a good choice. I don't think they would hurt you that much in the long run, but only if you're committed to improving your swing.

No matter what, they do look a lot better. The simple and sleek design of a blade is difficult to match with anything else.

I don't know. I've always had muscle back irons. I tried cavity back irons but did not like them. The club head was too big for my preference.

I don't have any problem with distance or hitting the sweet spot. My problem in the beginning was the driver not the irons.

I guess it all depends on your preference. I would suggest you try them out, if they have a demo set.

Don't overfocus on clubheads - golf clubs also have shafts.

When I swapped out irons in 2009, I tried both GI and SGI heads. I initially went with SGI heads, and here's what I found:

The Ping G10 and Callaway Big Bertha (original wave) models seemed to balloon the ball (up too high) on the short irons. Turns out both models came stock with high-launch shafts. So, the SGI head + shaft was "too much of  a good thing" for my swing.

I eventually opted for the Calla X20 irons, which had a Uniflex mid-launch shaft. The longer irons got up OK, plus the short irons and PW didn't balloon on windy days.

In subsequent fittings, I usually got recommended for GI heads with circa-100 gram steel shafts.

If you're interested, check out a recent thread on shafts, Steel vs. graphite

What I would advise you to do is go to demo days, and hit some irons to see which ones you like - thin the candidate field, so to speak. Then, get a fitting on a launch monitor and see which iron/shaft combinations give you.... (1) decent launch numbers, and; (2) a model you have confidence in. Ideally, you can hit on outdoor launch monitor and see how the ball actually flies.

Note: Some individual manufacturers are having by-appointment club fittings at golf courses around the USA. Titleist and Callaway are involved.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Terry - what a story…I’m about 12 yrs your junior but I do have friends in similar places of life. Like others have said - “go for it”.  The fact that you’re willing to challenge yourself in the midst of dealing with something like Parkinson’s is hero level stuff….looking forward to seeing how this great adventure plays out and make sure to get some of it on video as well.  Make them memories dude!
    • Played nine today. Just went out trying to make a swing that had the feels of what I am working on. I would give it a C- at best. The best swing came on the 9th hole, 220 yard par 3, downwind. I finally made a swing where I felt the pause, and the arms down stuff like I practice. I hit the 4 iron about 215 yards, it rolled just off the back of the green about 20-Ft from the pin.  I might play 10 yards shorter on every iron shot, and make that pause swing, cause I can still hit it about 90-95% the distance.  Distance wedges or 3/4 wedges are going to different. Shanked two of them today trying the pause, arms down stuff. Might spend a bit of time looking at the video on those shots specifically.
    • Day 350: good practice session today. Hit about 25 balls, working slowly on my priority piece. It looks decent in slow motion. Better at full speed but not quite there. Then putted for about an hour. Focused on putts inside 10’ but also did a stack putting session.
    • Two of my golfing Buddie's are left handed. I will play a couple of rounds and use their clubs and see how I do.  Played last Thursday and had the worst game ever. (Playing in really strong winds. (SW @ 20 to 30 mph with > gusts.)  Will let everyone know when I get back out. May not play until Monday.   Thanks everyone, for your encouragement.    Terry
