My new instructor is changing my swing substantially. One of the things is having me tilt at address like in this video:

http://golf-info-guide.com/video-golf-tips/spine-should-tilt-at-address-but-not-too-much-video/

I have a hard time with this. It feels unbalanced and unsymmetrical as I make the back swing,

Anyone else have trouble with this?

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

I have no idea what degree tilt I have at address. I just know it feels naturally  comfortable.

On another note,  I never thought much of a coach who couldn't work with the good things their student already has.

Of course if the student plans on staying with the coach who's making numerous changes, while taking multiple lessons, over a longer period of time, then perhaps the changes are a good thing. Time will tell.

I'm willing to give it a shot. I haven't had lessons in a few years and it seems like I've picked up a lot of bad habits.

I can't blame you for saying this feels uncomfortable. Your instructor is introducing something new into your setup position, and it doesn't feel "natural". Unfortunately, too many things that feel natural are anathema to a good golf swing. I can't tell you how many guys I see set up straight over the ball, and the only time they get behind it is on the follow through and finish as they execute the classic reverse pivot!

Your latest post has just come in where you mention picking up bad habits. It happens to all of us. They creep in like weeds to a garden. That's what we need the other set of eyes for. A good teaching pro can tell you more about your swing in a half hour than you can figure out in a whole Summer of hacking away at the range. Give your guy a chance, because you DO need to get behind the ball.

Just watching the video - it seems pretty orthodox to me.  I've noticed my instructor does this thing when we're deciding what to work on next . .he'll ask me to do 2 different things and then ask me which feels worse.  Which is hardest to do.  Invariably, the the thing that is hardest to do and feels the worst is what we go with, lol.

I do it, but I think of it more as moving my hips an inch or two toward the target. That is what my Evolvr Instructor and @iacas have suggested. You don't want to really tilt away from target by moving your head back. Just ease your hips a bit forward. This presets the hips a bit more forward and helps with the centered hip turn and getting the weight forward at impact. My hips are a bit more forward than Adam Scott below.

Thanks Buckeye, I appreciate the encouragement.

I think moving hips forward is another way of saying tilt your spine.  Just from another reference point.

I've just recently began to intentionally add a bit of tilt, and my ball striking, especially off the tee has improved significantly.

That's what I hear. I used to think the whole tilt thing was just for the driver setup.

(edited)

Just checked myself in the mirror today while thinking of this thread. I'm a righty and yes, my right shoulder was lower than my left as it should be. I didn't see any noticeable "tilt" of the spine. I check in here and see the pic of Adam Scott. He seems very "vertical" at first glance, but I think because there are no exaggerated postures in his setup. Looking more closely, not only is his head behind the ball, the tip of his nose is a fraction of an inch behind the back of the Driver clubhead. Yet, he doesn't seem to be "leaning" one way or another. One thing I noticed is the position of his hands. They aren't in the center of his body, nor are they toward his right hip or thigh. They are where his inner left thigh joins the crotch.

That's the next thing I will check out in the mirror!

EDIT: Took one more quick glance at the pic of Adam Scott, and if you look at his belt, you will see that his left hip is tilted up, and his right hip down. But, as I said before, It's very subtle, nothing exaggerated.

That's also not a real photo. There's no shadow from the ball, the clubhead… etc.

Adam's left hip is probably about 1/4"-1/2" above his right. It's not much.

Please explain what you mean by not a "real" photo. I know that sometimes these things are photoshopped to clean them up to illustrate a point. The shadows of his legs are clearly visible. He is teeing off into the sunset. The shadow of the ball might be on the driver clubface because I can see the shadow of the tee on the ground leading to it. The fact that there is no shadow from the clubhead is problematic. Who knows? Maybe Stanley Kubrick isn't dead, and he used some of his "moon landing" technology to take this pic.

And my point about his posture was that nothing in it seems exaggerated. And yes, Adam's hip tilt is not much. That why I termed it "subtle".

It's highly edited. I wouldn't trust it to learn a whole lot about subtle little things. That might not even be the club he was swinging given everything else that's off about it.

There's nothing to explain. It's clearly an edited picture. Who knows what he was actually doing in that photo, what club he was swinging, etc. At the very least the ball and club appear to be edited in. That casts doubt on the image as a whole.

Interesting. The source seems to be this Golf DIgest article.

If anything I thought maybe the background was fake. You can tell because a little piece of whitewater (right side of Adam just above the trees) never changes as you go through the slide show.

On the other hand it seems unlikely that a different club was photo shopped in. It's a huge effort to do something like that and why bother?

Then where's the shadow? That's all. They drew it in for Adam but not the rest? The topic isn't whether it's a fake image, though, so could we move on?
