Hello,

Looking for ball recommendations this time, I know a lot is down to individual preference/fell but though people may want to make some suggestions. I'm a 24 handicap but improving, swing speed is around 80-85mph and currently using Wilson dx2. I like the ball but there seems to be little green side spin.

What alternatives or tried and tested balls would people suggest, I was looking at the Wilson urethane, but other suggestions welcome.

I'd suggest you test our the following.  I've had good experiences with all of these.

For where you're at now, id just focus on having something to play with thats not too expensive. The big box retail stores like target and walmart sell refurbished balls from the major brands for pretty cheap. Id do something like that instead of focusing on one ball. Play with as many different types of ball you can.

When you're consistantly shooting mid to low 80's, thats when id focus on something a little more specific.

I really liked the Wilson Duo last year. This I'm trying the Top Flite Gamer Soft and I like that a little better. It seems to hold greens better. Both are pretty inexpensive.

As a high-handicapper, I'd second this. If you are in the U.S., those recycled balls can be had for as little as $8 a dozen and are generally in decent condition. The local K-Mart has Nike, Titleists, Calaway and Bridgestone. The vagaries of our swings make a far greater difference than the particular ball it is.

Instead of focusing on a particular score, I'd think about the number of balls you lose in a typical round. As a beginner, I lost a ton of balls. Now, I'm getting a bit better at keeping them and occasionally use new balls. My favorites are Nike PD Soft and Bridgestone E-6.

Yup-walmart in canada sells recycled in pretty good shape, $19 for 15 balls. As a high handicapper I find using the same type of ball for a round is better for my score. Putting in particular.

Whatever you decide, I've found it's best to stick with the same ball for the entire round.   Each ball will putt slightly different and that's a variable you don't need.    If you pick a Nike, stick with that ball for the entire round.   You'll notice the difference when you do decide to change.

If your looking into urethane, Id suggest Bridgestone e5. I love it and its had a dramatic impact on my game. Its also a 2 piece and higher trajectory which is super important with your swing speed. I know because my swing speed is just a tad higher than yours. The e5 rocks the greens but still goes pretty far. I lost quite a bit of distance with other urethane balls but not the e5. Good luck!

Just remember when you go with a ball that spins more it also spins off the driver and fairway woods. If you have a slice swing you will go even further off line with a high spinning ball. Try a sleeve and see if that is true for you. If it is stick with a two piece ball and work on your shot game to adjust to more roll out on your short shots and chips into and around the green.

I used to play the top flight gamer and gamer tour.  I tried the Srizon Q-Star and although I did like them, they are a little too expensive.  I just played a few rounds with the Bridgestone extra soft and really think the soft balls are the way to go for me.  I really enjoy the Callaway Supersoft and have to try to make it up to Dicks to get some of the Gamer softs

    • Went back to controlling my knees. That part was getting a bit sloppy when I worked on my backswing. Right hip didn't slide or gain internal rotation. I would just rotate back and around and the left knee would be in a bad spot. Really focusing now on keeping my left knee very stable and straighter in the backswing. I can't go back to the old pattern of overturning the hips. I was returning to my old pattern to time my downswing. Turn forever.  Left knee controls both knees and hips, acting as an anchor. Feel like it straightens a bit.   Hinge sooner and faster. Not in a way that sends the hands out and flips the club over. I still noticed when the hands get to A2.5, the hands would want to flip over and flatten the club out a ton.  Still trying to figure out how to roll the forearms a bit open and not just roll the club inside a ton.  Figure out the timing to get the hands down. Still getting a bit of right elbow collapsing in the downswing because the arms are too high when I turn. Everything is happening sooner now. If the hips are controlled, the backswing is shortened. Because it is shortened I don't know when to get the hands down and I just turn because the downswing is a go.  Very slow (50%) swings are decent.
