This thread makes me think of Tin Cup at the beginning of the movie. It perfect displays the idea that a perfectly struck shot is what brings you back.:

Molly: You know, this is without a doubt the stupidest, silliest...most idiotic, grotesquely masquerading game ever invented.
Roy: Yes ma'am and that's why I love it. Now if you hit one good shot, just one, and that tuning fork rings in your loins and you can't wait to get back...and do it again.

That said, taking the above line from the OP literally, I totally agree with it.  My memories from most rounds, good AND bad, are the best shots, not necessarily the holes with the best scores.

Why didn't you post this earlier?!?

Sometimes, I look at what GG thinks was my best hole and I think to myself WTF? :-D

My only post round analysis is to see what I could have done better. I have no preference for good or bad memories though many are one in the same. Last time I played I had a three hole stretch of GIR with 10 putts. One hole included a penalty on a par 5 and I still got it there. Good or bad I am indifferent to the shots and resulting scores. There really wasn't a takeaway, unfamiliar course with greens much faster than I am accustomed to. I play how I play because my skill level dictates the result. For better or worse it's Ground Hog Day golf until I put in the time to change. The spread of worse than average and better than average shots is pretty even.

I suppose, my standards are from the I'm-just-trying-to-get-those-nice-shots-I-get-on-the-driving-range-to-the-course type of thing.

That, and my irons feel like crap on anything that doesn't just hit the center of the face. That's the main "benefit" of playing with a "players" club. You feel like your game was totally crappy except for those 4 reasonable shots you get in a round. :-P

Anyone thinking of Brad Gilbert, who wrote a book called "Winning Ugly"? Not exactly a picture of grace, but he got a lot out his game and beat a lot of people who "looked" like better players than he.

On video, your good result bad swings don't really look all that different. A really ugly bad swing will usually not end up w/a good result.

    • Which was his second hole, yeah. I talked with Mav's coach/instructor last night, ha ha.
    • Yikes! Colin Morikawa withdraws on 11th tee after the practice swing made his lower back twinge.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
