He's got 4 thoughts, here they are:

Quote

"I've got about four or five swing thoughts out there at the minute, so that's why I'm sort of happy with 71 with how much I'm focusing on my golf swing and my technique," he said.

"My left-hand grip is too strong, takeaway was going on the inside, wasn't holding my right elbow properly at the top of my swing, wasn't getting my right knee out of the way on the down-swing. I've been working on a few things.

I'm guessing bed some stuff in, bed is short for embed. Bed that traj so you can flag those pins! The article is titled swing changes, sounds more like maintenance.

Quote

"Michael and I have done a good bit of work over the last few days, trying to bed some stuff in. It will take a while but I was encouraged with some of the shots I hit out there today.

"I was joking with my friends at the weekend: I've got 17 swing thoughts down to about five, so I'm doing okay. Try to get that to two next week."

Amazing. I am gonna call out Rory on that. I wonder if ANYBODY, let alone a top flight pro can actually touch 5 conscious checkpoints while executing a serious swing? 2 is my personal limit. Anything over 2 is a set up for shorting my circuit.

Do you think he's touching on them during the swing or just rolling through the list during his routine and setup to 'prime the motor' so to speak?

Good point. But still !!.. I mean, you would still have to unify the feeling of all the 5 to execute. I still think the fella exaggerates a bit for effect (like the 17 thoughts thing.. you KNOW that can't be).

Like I said if I had a checklist of anything over 2 (I always have at least 1) even to prime the motor, I would have to go home after the 5th hole out of sheer exhaustion.

I do, and that's why I'm not a "Stupid Monkey". Of course, it might be too much? IDK, but it's what I need to insure that my swing does what I want at least some of the time?

Both. At setup and at key positions.

I'm not so sure I could play better if I didn't do this, I think I'd play worse. Everything for me is analytical.

Oh, just having swing thoughts wouldn't necessarily mean you are not 'stupid monkey'. If the thought is your priority than just fine. Not bible truth or anything but IMHO 5 at a time is way to many even for the best.

Just sayin....

Ah, then I don't really know what is a Stupid Monkey then.

The thoughts are not concurrent. That would be really difficult to achieve. One at a time is more realistic.

I guess this might be a bit OT:

Just means you gotta stick to your priority list (however many things agreed upon by you and your instructor) without getting distracted by some new thing that is not on the list every other day..

These sound more like sequential thoughts, and not simultaneous ones. Seems like it's entirely possible to make these swing thoughts during the course of a swing.

Could you do it? Probably not, but you are not Rory.

I'm sure his ability to hit balls 300 yards is not his only separator from the typical golfer. . .

That's a good point.

At the very least, he's a highly experienced golfer and in the limited amount of time I've been playing I have noticed increased awareness of perceived time within the golf swing to obtain certain feels.

It may only be a perception or an improved ability to remember the particular swing after the fact, but perhaps with experience he's more tuned into the subtle time increments in terms of swing landmarks, positions, and feels.

I was thinking the same thing.  Recently . I've wondered if that wasn't another difference between pros and ams . .the ability to track a number of different movements when they need to.  I often feel like, in practice, I'm trying to track one too many.  Perhaps in their practice, they can easily track all that and more.

Most athletes have very strong kinesthetic perception. They can consciously do a movement and do exactly what they think they are doing. They have coaches just to tell them what movements to do as they already "know" how.

We are starting to be able to measure it like IQ as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinesthetic_learning

It's really 4 - 1 = 3 things imho, strengthening the grip is something you do during setup, not something done w/intent before the swing, motion-wise. So it's still multiple things. Also, if his takeaway is less inside, doesn't that set his elbow in a better position at the top? Just thinking aloud here. The right knee is definitely its own thing.

Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
