After the success of our first outing at Conklin Players Club yesterday.

@krupa, @RFKFREAK, @colin007 and myself @onthehunt526 were thinking we would do a second outing in the Utica/Rome area to include more TST members and see if the Syracuse, Binghamton, North Country and others within 90 minutes of the proposed site would be interested. Twin Ponds Golf and Country Club in New York Mills is about equidistant between Albany and Ithaca... There's also Valley View Golf Club in Utica proper.

The plan is for the Central N.Y. members to do something with the Western Guys in the future and eventually get everyone together from Upstate and Northern PA somewhere in the Central Section and have an outing with everyone next summer...

But for now we're looking at the Central and Capital District guys for this one.... a Western N.Y. Northern Tier PA Finger Lakes meet up in western N.Y.  next spring (so we can get @iacas in the 90 minute-2 hour circle)... then next summer get everyone together at a nice Course in the middle...

Like I said Twin Ponds and Valley View are just suggestions...

If you guys have any suggestions of where and when... Let me know... We're calling all Syracuse, Albany, Binghamton, Utica, Ithaca, Watertown, North Country guys within about 90 minutes- 2 hours of the target area which is the Utica/Rome area at either Twin Ponds or Valley View or another Course similar in price.

Absolutely especially with the fact it hides in the Member Outings and Meet- ups Category.

Calling @JxQx and others from the Syracuse area.

Definitely interested.  I have no opinion on courses... maybe one a little easier than Conklin?

I'm hoping for one that allows for the use of driver more often.  Game Golf said I only used driver 5 times.

It seems like this idea is taking a little bit to get some traction.... Don't know if @krupa @RFKFREAK or @colin007 knows anyone who's on the site who is from Upstate aside from maybe @JxQx

I know @iacas is going to possibly not like this idea (but he might... if he doesn't give me a warning for light spamming)

Hear me out, I know there some guys from Upstate on THP... How bout an Upstate version of The Sand Hacker Cup between the Upstate TST guys against the Upstate THP guys?

I don't know... would anyone from the Tennessee Highway Patrol really want to come all the way to CNY to play golf?

Seriously, though, I'm not interested in anything with a competitive theme, even if it's just for bragging rights.

It's just an idea... It could be we'd just get them to come for a more the merrier scenario...

Matt, I only suggested it, because we haven't heard a peep from the Syracuse guys... unless they had another course in mind.

I think @colin007 would share that sentiment.

I'm honestly thinking the Syracuse guys are just asleep from all the heat and humidity this summer... Obviously; Twin Ponds is a little closer to them, then the 4 of us... Hell, if we waited till late spring/ early summer we could do the Leatherstocking idea.

Unless the Syracuse and Binghamton guys such as @JxQx have a better course in mind. Conklin was great considering how little rain there has been this summer... hell if it was up to me I'd stay on the "I-88" corridor and say the hell with it... Because Oneonta is almost exactly the halfway point between here me and @krupa (Ithaca) and @colin007 and @RFKFREAK

The only issue I had with Leatherstocking (It's beautiful don't get me wrong) It's expensive... we're talking $100 for a round... If I wanted to spend that kind of money on a round of golf; I'd play Bethpage Black (And shoot about 120 and have blisters on my feet).

Twin Ponds is in the $40 range... that's why I suggested it...If it was just Matt and I and whatever Binghamton or Elmira guys I'd say Hiawatha that's like 35 minutes from here...

Sorry for the delayed response been pretty busy the last week or so. Rome Country Club is a decent course, its like $40 or so and may be worth checking out. There aren't a whole lot of public courses as well manicured as conklin around the area. The only one around syracuse is Timber Banks and is more difficult than conklin due to the greens. I'll try to think of some more course and post in here a little later.

Edit: Just thought of another course when I posted, mcconnellsville is another course that's well taken care of, also relatively cheap. It has a pretty interesting layout and isn't overly difficult.

90 minutes is awesome.

I've heard good things about Timber Banks. Nicklaus course, right?

And @RFKFREAK is correct, I'm with @krupa in that I don't wish to do anything competitive. Y'all can, I'll just play my own game.

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
