hello, I am a 3.4 handicap and I am 15 years old. I'm seeking advice on how to start my downswing. I've been told that I should try to make my right shoulder change places with my left shoulder (I am left handed). I've also been told to try to shift my hips towards the target and keep body closed. I can show swing video if need be. thank you :)))

Stuff and nonsense.  Old people are full of crap.  Look up Paul Wilson on You Tube (the king of the lazy swing) and figure out what you can use.  My guess is something...which is better odds than most.

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

Wait a minute. You're a 3.4 index and need tips on starting your downswing? And you're 15 years old? I'd say you're on a really good track! I wouldn't think that you need too many tips on anything. Just keep doing what you're doing. You are now in the realm of golf where improvement comes slowly, stroke by stroke.

I understand it's a function of youth to be impatient. You want it now! Well, golf ain't that way! Just keep at it. Learn yourself as much as you learn the game. You are at the point in life where you are just beginning to grow into your strength. As strong as you feel now, it won't compare to how you feel at 19, or at 22, or at 25!

Have just a bit of patience. You're not quite ready for the tour, yet!

If you do a lot right with your backswing then you get a lot for free on the downswing.

That being said, downswing feels depend on the golfer. Some might feel their left knee turn. Some might feel arms. Some might feel torso turn. Some might feel their right side or right hip pocket turning. Though people can say what the correct sequencing is. Doing it, and developing the feel for it is individual based.

I'm heading out soon, but if that video is the same one I think it is, it's pretty bad…

Your arms still DO things on the downswing. There's no such thing as lazy. Even in the pitching motion we teach where your arms come close to doing nothing, they still do a little bit.

And @seanoando, post your swing in a Member Swing thread and we'll have a look. Ignore those who almost make fun of you for being a 3.4 and wanting to get better…

I like to loosen up this way...to remind myself that the arms are just along for the ride.  Sorry about the tone of the post.  Reading it now is kind of embarrassing.  Me giving advice to a 3.5?  That's a laugh.

I bet the guy in that video also sells affordable flooring.

But for me, i actually don't have a downswing thought. The only thing going through my brain is "HIT THE BALL! ARRRGH!

Ummm...yeah... I have a trigger though, which i feel like is when my lead shoulder passes under my chin. At that point, i reverse direction. I don't have a mechanical thing i do, its just an instinct at that point for me. If you're playing 3 handicap golf, chances are you have a similar players instinct. Trust it and don't bog yourself down in golfs endless void of mechanical psycho babble.

If that was directed at me, I wasn't making fun in the least little bit! I would have been delighted to be 3.4 at 15 years old! I also would have wanted to be scratch!

As I said before, it's a function of youth to be impatient. Age throws a little different perspective on you. I figure that if he just keeps working at his game steadily, improvement will come over time. He's nowhere near as strong and physically skilled as he will be in a just a few years.

Besides, when you're shooting in the mid-70's, this is where improvement doesn't happen in jumps. Not like jumping from mid 90's to mid to high 80's from a short series of lessons. This is where improvement comes one hard earned stroke after another.

I wish the young man much luck. Maybe we'll be watching him on TV in 10 years. Hell, I hope I'm still alive in 10 years! See what I mean about perspective?

haha! I appreciate your view and it is great to hear some advice like that! I've only been playing for 3 years and it's crazy to see how far I've come.

Wow! If you can get to a 3.4 in 3 years, you must have mad skills! Finding that out leads me to believe that you also have an instructor. If so, I would stick to that guy like glue! He obviously knows what he's doing.

Look forward to seeing your seeing your swing on the My Swing page.

It wasn't. You didn't even post a video. It was directed at the post immediately before mine. The one with a video in it… ;-)

    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
