Really interesting, I actually asked him in that thread to post his thoughts on the game of golf, as he said he has a lot of thoughts on why its fun to hit the ball but not play the game.

I started last year and while I love the game of golf, I admit that I was really enjoying the maybe 2 months I spent at the range before starting to play regularly. I played maybe 2 rounds of 9 in my first two months, while hitting maybe 5 times/week.

I love the range or hitting into the net with a trackman but I have to put it to the test on the golf course.

"My ball is on top of a rock in the hazard, do I get some sort of relief?"

@James Tupper, One way to avoid the pace issue is to go out as a single after the last group in the evening and play 3 or 4 balls.  You might only play 6 holes before it gets dark but 6 holes times 3 balls is kind of like 18 holes and it takes about an hour.  And you should be able to find courses with steep super twilight rates.  The experience is half way between being on the range and playing a round of golf.  You'll probably want a cart to drive back to the club house in the dark though.

I think it's kind of neat that all he wants to do is work on his golf swing.  All the power in the world to him.

His swing is a lot better at three years than mine is after six.

He responded to me when I said Id be interested in his rant against the game of golf, but love for hitting a golf ball. Told him I actually agree with some of what he says.

Golf is just extremely conservative / traditional. The game itself and the social aspects that surround the game. I feel like there are way too many strict rules in golf. Situations like a club touching a ball, getting grounded in a bunker, moving leaves / debris, etc are all taken too seriously in golf IMO. It would be cool if you were able to lift and replace 1-3 fairway shots throughout a round incase you land in someone else's divot or something.

Golf isn't very accessible, but I think it totally could be if you take it off the course. Things like Big Break, Top Golf, and the long drive tournaments are all innovative ways to make golf competitive and fun.

I think a tournament sponsored by a company like Red Bull could be awesome! Imagine the best golfers in the world just doing skill shots for points. What if there were targets floating in the air that you had to hit, or hoops that you had to flight the ball through. Or challenges like highest flop shot, closest to the pin, etc.. Things like this don't require a lot of space and it could be in a stadium environment.

You don't need to spend money building / maintaining a gigantic course. You would just need a driving range and people could practice. And the possibilities would be endless with how you could make a driving range more interesting. It would be like a skate park, just for golf. I wish more ranges would just add some cooler stuff to hit at rather than just a flag. I've only been to one range in my life that had an elevated target (giant plywood board about 200 yards out) and it was insanely fun and rewarding to try and hit it.

Anyways, those are just a few thoughts. I could go on and on forever on this. :P

I mostly agree with his points too, the gist, rather than the specifics. To me it feels like golf looks too much to its past and not doing enough to adjust to the present and future. Too conservative, moves too slowly, but that's just my opinion. Slow play, the time suck it is is holding it back.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

He basically described TopGolf.
