Golf is like being married to a beautiful woman that can cook, change a flat tire and never turns you down. But   just for fun she slaps you around in public.

I saw @mvmac hit a shot to about 2 feet on this hole last January.  I, on the other hand, hit a scared-hook well left of the danger.

There are 2 options in a "don't hit over there scenario"  1. hit to said point within inches or 2. hit on the complete opposite side of the planet.

I simply played the hole as it was designed, a really short dogleg-right par 4.

Just because its only 179 from the blue tees doesn't mean it can't be a par 4.  A really really short par 4.

I didn't say I wasn't trying to go for it, but at the last moment my self-preservation instinct took over, leading to the "scared-hook".  Turning it into a par-4 is a blatant attempt to save face on my part.  Obviously it didn't work

That's a fun golf course, I hope we get to play it when I go back to La Quinta in January.

Basically it would depend on the temperature and wind which I would use. Besides, I'd tend to pull it anyway so I'd probably end up in the bunker.

How is that for Zen? Remove all distractions. The only thing that exists is me, the club, the ball, and the hole. OOooooooohhhhmmmmm.

Notice how I brought that back on topic. ;-)

Actually, that is pretty accurate to what they say you should do on holes with trouble like this. Focus on where you want the ball to go, not where you don't.

Yeah yeah, you big hitter you.  I think I probably hit 4 or 5, I think Mike hit 6.  The pin was back, so it was more like 185.

Not just holes like this, every single shot.  Even on a drive to a 100-yard wide fairway, pick a specific target to focus on, and ignore everything else.  If you ever play the Old Course, on your tee shot you aim at a wee bit of gorse just right of the Swilcan Bridge.  On 18, you aim at the center of the clock on the R&A clubhouse.  That fairway is 130 yards wide, and people miss it all day long.
