Here's what happened. I went golfing today, figuring with the holiday coming up, the course might start getting busy.

On a par 4, my 2nd shot lands in a green side bunker. Really soft, fluffy sand. On my 3rd swing, the ball comes out, but I hit the ball again, while it's in the air, on the same stroke with the shaft of my club. The ball rolls into the hole. I holed out for par on the hit that caused the penalty stroke.  I used rule 14.4, adding a one penalty stroke.

The guy I am paired with, another walk on, previously unknown to me, says I have to add 2 strokes instead of one. I say no problem, and let it go at that. At the end of my round, with that 1 stroke penalty I card a 79.

Is this correct?

Three talent strokes plus one penalty stroke (iaw R14-4) = 4. ;-)

The easy way to remember is that you just count the extra "hit" as if it were another stroke on its own....

Nice round.

Though if you are extra skilled, and manage the triple hit, it's still just one penalty stroke.

I'd say it's pretty talented to hit it more than once on the same swing

the other guy pushing more penalties is just exactly the type of person I hate to play with.  He's a walk on, you don't know him, likely not betting with him, he's just there, maybe he should stick with one of the following I'd like to offer:

  • "nice shot", or
  • "how about that local football team", or
  • "getting cloudy we should try to play faster", or even
  • "let me buy you a cocktail for holing that shot, it's my turn anyway" or
  • "I'd like to warn you I'm kind of a dick on the course, you should turn down your hearing aid so you can enjoy your round"

Patch was classy in this situation.  I like that

Yes and no, if you hit it 3 or 4 times with the same swing, its just the stroke plus one penalty stroke.

True, but in 50 years, I've never seen more than 2 hits on the same swing.

It's an easy way to remember how to assess the penalty for a double strike.
