Stick with the tees that you are more comfortable playing. A day of hitting the ball well should produce a memorable round. Just think what a great score you would have had playing at 6,000!

That great score apparently wouldve been an low! Played again today and somehow played even better and shot 83 for a personal best from my good ol middle tees.

It amazes me that people are talking about what set of tees to play, instead of talking about self deception!

I've seen it over and over again, just like the guy described in the OP who says you just need to play from farther back! It doesn't matter what tees you play from. If your game doesn't match the circumstances, you lose!

We know a guy like this. He goes out to play a local course with his Dad, and he shoots 39! Or so he tells us!  He goes out with us, and he shoots in the 50's or 60's for nine holes,  and can't keep a shot in play!

Long story short, he's a damned liar! But not only is he lying to others, he is lying to himself!

I'm 70 years old and generally play better if I play around 6000 yards or less. But, if I am joining someone, I will play back as far as 6500 yards but not beyond that.  I realize my score will not be as good but as long as I am hitting good shots, it give me a chance to work on my short game since I will not be able to reach the really long par 4s.  Unless the par 3s are over 210, I am ok and par 5s are no more than 550...I am good there too.

I don't mind pairing up with other golfers but generally stay at the tees I am currently playing and certainly don't move back to tees that are going to make the game absurdly hard (I have no desire to play from 7000 yards!). My bigger frustration is that if I get paired with other golfers from the beginning and want to play the tips (courses around NYC that I play are very short, approximately 6k yards from the tips) they will often insist on joining me from the back tees. If it gets bad enough I will eventually suggest that we both move up to an easier tee box but obviously prefer not to do this.

Is it because the game is too hard and the rules too punishing for 75% of "golfers" out here in Hackerland?

Some may reason that losing a ball is enough of a penalty? Those things are expensive!

I don't really care if people don't take score properly if it doesn't affect me, but you should play whatever tees you want. After all you did pay for YOUR round.

I sometimes play tips but if there is a line on the 1st hole I'll drive from the blues so I don't feel like an idiot if I shank one though :P

I personally always stick to playing from the white tees regardless of where others I'm paired with are playing, distance is one of my weaknesses so spending the day hitting hybrid and long iron approach shots would probably get pretty frustrating for me.  Next year, though, I may try moving back to the blues at my home course since its very very short to begin with and it might be fun to break things up a bit.

As for the scoring, like others have said, if there's no $$$ on the line then I'm not really bothered by what others card.

I like to play the "white" tees, usually no more than 6100 yards. I've been paired up with folks who play different tees that me and it doesn't bother me one bit but I would never play back just because some stranger wanted me to. You play your tees and I'll play mine, mic that's a problem for anybody I'm playing with, they can go on without me.

my get up and go musta got up and went..

    • I haven't run the ShotScope yet, but I played 18 today.  I hit a great drive on 6 and then, holes 7-17 (excluding par-3s) I hit some very uninspired drives.  Then, after hitting on 17, I realized I'm over-swinging.  So at 18, I took a practice swing with the drill I've been doing during practice shots at home the past few weeks.  Then I decided, one more practice swing, but you know, with the ball right there. So I did.  I didn't even hit it at full speed.  It resulted in a nice high draw and settled onto the fairway.  To put it simply:  if the rules allowed me to place the ball anywhere in my reasonable shot zone as that tee shot, the spot I would have chosen is where it ended up.  I went on to hit two more good shots (it's a par-5) and left myself with a 7' birdie putt.  While I missed it, that drive is going to stay in my head for a very long time.
    • Day 59, June 25.  Played 18 today.  I'll tell a story on the "best shot of the week" thread that makes me think happy thoughts.
    • Day 631 - 2026-06-25 Long day, but stayed a bit to get fifteen minutes of work in. Foam balls. Throwing the back of the club behind me.
    • Day 5 (25 Jun 26) - continued drills w/7i, hard foam balls focused on “nipping the tee below the ball” to reinforce consistent face contact.  Hit about 40 shots total.
    • Day 294 6-25 Low point control with towel. Then hit some foam balls with flow drill. Recorded.
