I've seen people argue on the course after a couple of close calls with errant drives, but never any violence.

Violence on golf course

I read this article about some violence on the golf course. I could totally see this happening. Has anyone else ever experienced any violence on the course?

The most offensive thing I have ever witnessed on a golf course is a video of my swing. It still gives me nightmares :-D

Nothing involving physical confrontation, everything has always stopped at the verbal level.

There was a thread on another site discussing who "carried" while playing golf.  There were quite a few people who claimed to have a weapon on them at all times.  One can never know which idiot will decide to take the next step.

I make it a point to not escalate things.  No picking up balls, hitting them back, shouting.  If someone approaches me after giving me a close call, I will listen to their apology if it was an accident.  Generally I do not want any interaction with anyone who might have been trying to send me a message.

I dreamed about violence on the golf course. I was playing with @Jeremie Boop and a few others that I didn't know. We just walked off a green when a ball came flying in and ended up a few feet from the flag with a bunch of cheering from crowds that had gathered around. Turns out that it was Brandt Snedeker playing with some guys that were hacking it around. On the next tee, I looked around to see where Jeremie was. The guys in the other group were beating the hell out of him behind the previous green because he yelled at them for Snedeker hitting into us.

.... Interesting because I'm about the last person that would yell at others on the course.

I saw this story on Twitter. Yikes. You know what they say, the referee always sees the second punch. I agree w/ the person that said it was probably brewing for a while.

I've never seen any violence in my short and undistinguished 2-year golf career. I've heard about people getting into fisticuffs on my home course as recently as last August (which is surreal) but never saw it with my own two eyes. I've seen plenty of bullying however, i.e., people hitting into people, etc.

Personally I have way too much to lose to get into a fight on the golf course. This being the Pacific Northwest, I would go to jail for defending myself whereas my attacker would get free treatment for depression.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
