Im fairly new to golf.  Ive only been playing for 6 months.  Im currently shooting 84- low 90s.  I bought some new Ping Gs when i started playing.  When i bought them they really didnt help me get fitted for these clubs. I walked into my local Edwin Watts store today and tried a bunch of irons.  I tried mine, callaway apex, callaway xr steelhead, taylor made M2 tours, and the Nike Vapor Fly pro.  I hit the Nikes  futher and straighter than any of the other irons. They had the Nike Vapor fly pros on sale new for $499.  Would any of you guys trade in Ping Gs for the Nike vapor fly pros or am i just crazy to even think about it?  some of the salesmen were telling me not to but i can't argue with the results.   I was averaging about 165yds carry and total distance about 178-182yds with the 7 iron. Thanks

That's odd that the salesmen recommended you don't get them. Nike is getting out of the equipment business but those are still good irons. What reason did they give?

You said it yourself, you hit the Nike's the best and can get them new for $499, I'd go with the Nike irons.

If you're looking for a bit more distance and you liked the feel of the Nike VFP irons then go for it.  I've got a buddy who has them and they are solid irons.

Might it be they are not pushing the Nike clubs because of the margins.  They are decent irons so if the specs fit you correctly go for it.

I agree. This might be the best time to buy Nike clubs. From my experience they make a pretty good club.

The more you play you will realize the most important thing (besides having a good swing, etc) is having confidence in your equipment.  I used to be held up on getting the coolest looking clubs or brands and most times they were not the best clubs for me.  Case in point, tried the new Mizuno JPX 900 Forged and hated them.  Great club but for whatever reason I just could not get confidence to hit the ball well with them.  In the past, I would pay the big bucks to get them just because and be in awe in how beautiful they look, be the envy of my buddies who loved them, etc.  but you have to get what you feel most comfortable with.

Point being if the Nike clubs are it and its a good price then do not hesitate.  I personally am not a Nike fan, but at the end of the day when you play well, win some money against buddies, etc. nobody really gives a crap what equipment you play with.  In fact, have a buddy who is scratch that still plays with Hogan Blades that are at least 20 years old. Have no grooves left but he is the purest ball striker I play with and those clubs may be more important to him than his kids (just kidding; maybe not).

Go for  them  if you're  pretty  sure  they  fit your  needs ,

But keep  the  Pings ,  just in case if you  can

Honeymoons with  new  clubs  can be  short and you  might  be  wishing  for  those  easy-to-use  Pings again

Every golfer NEEDS a spare set or two  or three ...

Your buddy  may visit  and  need to  borrow  a set of them to play  with  you ,  you know ?

Lower commissions/incentives too, maybe?

Thanks for the replies guys. Here's an update. I traded in my Ping GS and my wife's Adams set and got me the Nike Vapor Pros and the got me some Titleist AP1s 716. The weather here has been cold so I haven't gone out to the course yet but I will next Monday. Now I'm debating trading in my AP1s for some Callaway Apex CF16s. I'll keep everyone updated.

Why would you trade in the AP1's unless you play a couple of rounds with them and find them unsuited to your game.  If you already think they are unsuited to your game you selected badly in buying them.

Good luck with the clubs and hope they work out well for you.

I'm playing this Monday and Tuesday.  I'm going to play with the AP1s to see how they feel. If I don't like them I'll trade them in for the Apex.

Only golfing for six months and already breaking 90 and upgrading to new irons is not too shabby. You must have some innate, natural talent there. Congratulations!

Thanks I've been taking lessons as well. I used to hate golf. I would go a few years ago and leave after 8 holes. This summer I played and fell in love with golf. I go play about 2-3 times a week and have a practice net at the house. The good thing about living in south Texas is the weather is always great here. It's going to be in the high 70s for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. My strong point in my game is my irons and short game. Not so much my driving.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
