New record drive on Game Golf of 282 yards. It was so good, it rolled through the dogleg of the fairway.

We won't discuss what happened next...

Truthfully, I shouldn't be posting anything but poor shots, but I played the five par 3 holes in even par on Saturday, so... I had at least a few memorable swings.

3rd Hole - 6 iron from about 170 was left of the green, and kicked further left.  I had a tree branch hanging down in my line, so I needed to keep the ball beneath that.  I pitched the ball and nipped it perfectly.  It caught a leaf on the bottom of the branch, but it didn't hurt it at all.  The ball hit the green right where I aimed and rolled to within a foot.  I tapped in for par.

8th Hole - 6 iron from about 170 again.  I played a nice little fade that hit about 10 feet in front of the pin, hopped once and rolled just behind the pin leaving me a downhill 4 footer for birdie.  I made that one for my first birdie since January 7th.

12th Hole - 5 iron from about 190 that was a perfect fade, again.  This one flew just beyond the flag and finished just in the fringe, but I was able to get up and down with a putt from off the green finishing 2 feet short and then tapping in for par.

16th Hole - Again, a 6 iron from about 170.  I didn't have the cleanest strike on the ball, but it got to the green and released to the back.  2 putts from about 35 feet for par.

The only bogey I made on a par 3 was another 6 iron that flew about 180 yards and went over the back of the green.  I couldn't get up and down from there... but overall, I played all five of those holes in even par, which significantly helped my horrible score for the day.

Yesterday I played 18 holes at George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park, MA (a suburban neighborhood of Boston). On the 435 yard, par 4, dogleg left tenth hole, I hit the longest and best drive of my life. There are markers on each hole (200, 150, and 100 yards) that tell you how far you have remaining to the green. At around the 200 yard marker begins a hill that carries down to the front of the green. My drive was a perfect draw that ended up about 10 yards in front of the 150 yard marker in the middle of the fairway. It was at least a 290 yard drive. I usually hit my driver an average of 250 on a good day. Since the hole was downhill I used my 9-iron for my second shot and landed it within 15 feet of the pin and got a par for the hole.

Last week I was on a golf trip to Italy, near lake Como. Had a best shot I would like to share :-)

First day I wanted to play the Lanzo course, but there was a tourney, so I could not play. I asked if I could enter the tourney and that was no problem. Lost 7 balls, so not a winning score that day, but there was a best shot of the month involved. It is a nine hole course and the short par3 was hit on the back side of the green by my pitching wedge. This was a bit strange, because my wedge flew 15 yards further then expected. So the next time I played the same hole, I said, ok lets give the gap wedge a try. And this was the result:

I've been playing pretty crappy lately with brief moments of brilliance.  I wish I could turn the tables on how that works but that isn't going to happen.  Earlier this evening I was playing a straight away downward slope 336 yard par 4 with two sand bunkers protecting the front of the green.  The green slopes pretty good back to the sand.  You don't want to hit long or you will be hitting back up a 50 ft. high hill to the green and then going off into the rough or bunker or risk hitting out of bounds into the highway.  There isn't much room going long if it comes in a little hot.  I hit a measly 225 yard drive to the left rough and the ball was sitting pretty low in the nasty.  My gps said 110 yards to the middle of the green.  Since I hit weak, I grabbed a 7 iron and blasted it out nice and high but it landed to the left of the green about 30 yards.  The ball was sitting in really high grass and I had a sand wedge in hand.  I decelerated badly and flubbed it about 7 yards.  I don't know if a 56/14 is the right club in that crap or not.  Now the ball is laying in the same nasty high grass but is right at the crease of the bunker and flat area.  This looked like real trouble for this high handicapper because the green was head high as I was standing up.  I got a real good look on how much slope it has to it from this predicament.  I was litterly standing in front of a wall.  I set up and was about ready to hit but adjusted my stance to have the ball hit about 2 feet higher up on the green if everything worked out.  I couldn't take a real good follow through so I tried my "stock" shot in these situations.  Swing and thump, up it went and took a few skids and smacked the flagged and down she went for a par.  I think a guy waiting up on the fairway got a good look at it too.

Longest drive ever .... wasn't even trying to fly the green on a 296 yd par 4.   Just smooth tempo swing ... caught it just right, rolled right up to the fringe - probably 288 or so.   It was a good 40 yards past a better than average drive for me ... funny how that happens sometimes

Is that the one that plays over the marsh, just behind the clubhouse?  I believe that Shawnee has a collection of the toughest par 3 holes I've ever played.  Par on any of them is a win!

Yep - they have 3 par 3's that I recall are over 190 FROM THE WHITE TEEs !

An utterly ridiculous shot - caught it very sweetly and it hit a hard fairway (albeit above the tee) and used the right-to-left slope to run and run and run.

...shame I thinned the pitch.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

Trying to fix the dreaded hooks, I pushed a drive on opposite fairway.    Had to run out between groups in front of guys waiting to tee off & hit the most awesome high 8 iron (~145 yds) over a really high tree which totally blocked me to 3 ft.    Got a standing ovation from the tee box - LOL

My best shot this week came on a short 265 par 4. There is a moat filled with water that stretches all the way across the front of the green. I teed off using my Adams #3 fairway wood for a lay up shot of 220 yards just in front of the moat. From that lie I used my PW which I was able to put the ball within 3 1/2 feet of the pin. I then made the putt for a birdie

Actually hit this one a bit too good as it went through the fairway into the rough.

That looks pretty tight as well that far up - great shot!

I was going to put my practice round drive on the 14th (course 1) this morning, but I hit a 155 yard approach shot to within 5 feet of the pin.

The rest of the round made me glad it was only a practice round.

12th hole at a public course near me (par 3 138 yards): The hole is on top of a hill surrounded by forest and trees that run away down the hill. The pin is on the left side of the green so I decide to hit a draw over a few trees, but end up pushing ball deep into the downhill forest. I manage to find my ball and hit a SW through trees and up the hill onto the right fringe, about 40 foot away. I make the putt for a very unlikely par.

Played a quick nine comp this afternoon, fifth hole is a 360 yard par 4 with a 90% dog leg right at 240 yards off the tee. hit three best shots in a row for a while, driver to 230 odd, 8 iron across the corner into a stiff breeze, finished pin high on the fringe 20 feet from pin, sank the put for first time birdie on the hole. Celebrations, many, then found out the fifth was the mystery birdie hole for the day, free beers for the group

510 yard Par 5. Hit a good drive in the first cut. Had 220 in with a slight breeze at my back Pin on the right hand side in the back on a shelf. Hit a perfect high cutting 5 iron to 15 feet. Easy two putt birdie.

Best 5 iron I have hit on the course, ever.

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
