Hi all,

I wanted to swing by here to quickly get opinions on some of the better forged iron sets that are relatively modern (post 2005 at least). I'm in the market for a second-hand iron set to tinker with and wanted feedback on what you all had great experiences with or have seen great reviews of. I'm not locked into any brand specifically but have seen fantastic things about early Nike blades and really any Mizuno forged blades. I'm looking to spend no more than 350 if that helps at all. I'm looking to lock down a purchase in several weeks before the season in the Midwest really picks up. Thanks for any opinions or suggestions! I look forward to scoping them all out!!

One thing to keep in mind...if you are going to use the irons for recreational play or local amateur tournaments you can play any of the models going back to 2005, but if you're going to play in any USGA or other elite amateur events,  irons made prior to 2010 will not be conforming.

One suggestion for you is Bridgestone forgings.  They are not as mainstream as some of the other brands, but in terms of quality and performance they are highly regarded and will stack up to anything on the market.  The j33 Blades and CBs are great (I have played the j33 CB since they were released in '06) j36 Blades and CBs are awesome, and the j40 CB are very blade-like.

I have also played Mizuno MP-4, MP-14 and MP-9, which are all older than your are looking for.  I don't have much experience with the stuff that they have released in the last 10-12 years, but they have always made great forgings.

Bridgestone j40 445 w/ Graphite Design AD DJ-7
Callaway Steelhead Plus 3 wood w/ RCH Pro Series 3.2
Adams Idea Pro hybrids (3 & 4) w/ Aldila VS Proto
Bridgestone j33 CB (5-PW) w/ original Rifle 5.5
Bridgestone West Coast 52*, j40 satin 56* & 60* w/ DG S-300
Odyssey White Hot XG #9
Bridgestone B330-RX

Would agree here, can't go wrong with forged Mizunos

A favorite of mine that would fit into your price range would be the Taylormade MC irons from maybe 3-4 years ago...the ones with the screw on the cavity, not the most recent ones with the sole slot.  The sole slot set is not all forged.

Forged is a pretty broad statement. Are you looking for forged blades or a forged cavity back? Mizuno jpx ez forged are available on ebay in your price range (used of course). There are also a bunch of blades if that's what your looking for.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
