DIII Golf at Carnegie Mellon

Hey guys,

i am a 7 handicap and I'm in my junior year . I usually average around the 75-79 for my score, and want to apply to Carnegie mellon( all their golfing team has an average above 80) . Would the coach help me with admissions , and what good colleges can I play at I I improve my score .

Welcome to The Sand Trap. I would recommend contacting the coach. Tell them of your interest in playing. I did this with track when I applied to college (back in 1978).

I coach a D3 team. We can't do anything to "help" with anything, really. There are no scholarships at DIII level.

Also, I know the CMU team and coach. We play them a few times a year. They don't average over 80… many shoot under par on tough golf courses.

We're not supposed to be able to do anything. It would be an NCAA violation to "help" a student with anything like that, even admissions.

I can tell you all about DIII golf, but ask more specific questions than that…

CMU is a top tier academic school.

So, plan for a bunch of safety schools where you know you'll get in academically, then a few target schools that you have an over 50% chance of getting in and 2 or 3 reach schools like CMU where even the best students have only a 10% to 15% chance of getting in.

If you go to the link that @iacas provided, you can click on the SCHEDULE tab and see how much travel they do.  You could click on the results for the events they've played, and see what kind of scores the other schools posted.  If you click on the STATISTICS tab, you can see the scores of each player at each event so far.   You'll see that they've had one player Medal, and several top 10s, so they're reasonably competitive.   That should give you some guidance as to what you need to shoot to make the team.  Of course, you have to get admitted to Carnegie Mellon, and that's probably a significant hurdle all by itself.   As for the practice schedule, that's a discussion you should have with their coach.  If you click on COACHES, you can get some contact info for their coach.  Pretty much all the info you want is available on the website.

DIII schools in general?

There are players that don't break 100 and players that have +2 handicaps, and all start. Some DIII schools don't have enough players. One DIII player, in my conference championship before I was coach, shot rounds of 162 and 158. The guy who medaled shot lower over two days than his 158 over one day (and that score was probably suspect… I'm sure his fellow competitors just took the "12" or whatever he would say at face value when it may have been a 13 or 15 or whatever).

Travel varies too. My team wins our conference a lot (7 of the last 8, the last 6 in a row) and we earn an automatic bid to Nationals when we do. So we travel for that, and we travel in the fall AND the spring. Some colleges only play golf in the fall OR the spring.

You can find out a lot of this information yourself, and if you're intelligent enough to get into Carnegie Mellon, you're going to be smart enough to find the answers to these basic questions yourself.

The NCAA violation isn't true, at least not across the board for all schools and sports.  My brother and I played baseball at Amherst and Pomona-Pitzer (which field sports teams together), respectively, and both of our coaches had some pull for admissions.  I think the Amherst coach may have even had a couple of guaranteed admission spots.

Obviously I don't know whether the golf coach at CMU has admissions pull in particular.

Division III schools have no athletic scholarships for students. They do have academic scholarships, and varying forms of grant in aid, which all students can compete for.

Div. III schools get heavily monitored by the NCAA to ensure their student athletes don't get more financial aid than other students.

Maybe whenever that was things were different. I can only speak to what the regulations are right now.

But NCAA Division III athletes can't get any strings pulled for them. You can't wink-wink nudge-nudge and give them financial aid that they're not entitled to, you can't get them admitted when they otherwise wouldn't be admitted, etc.

I'll confirm this with my school's compliance officer.

But, long story short @Akman, your golf may not be up to snuff enough for Dan Rodgers to care too much. His kids shoot good scores on tougher courses than you probably play right now. George Qian (I think that's his last name) routinely shoots in the 60s at Longue Vue, which plays to about a 73.2 rating.

Lots of schools did things like that in 90s. Some still do. It's a bit university to university. As long as they are admitted then they can be certified as eligible. Things were looser awhile ago. They're tighter now, yet each school is free to set their own admission policies.

That is not quite true. Often times they mask athletic scholarships as academic ones. My small engineering school claimed this but then was caught in the lie by a Boston Globe article. The article was not trying to out them or anyone, but the school stupidly gave information to get PR. It was an article about student althletes. I also had close friends that were getting academic scholarships because of their athletic ability.

I was an alumni at the time and wrote a nasty letter. They wrote back profusely apologizing. It was the lie that was more worrisome to me rather than them wanting student athletes. Just tell the damn truth.

I had meant that I already have  good grades, a 3.9 uw and a 4.4 weighted. My question was that , would they be able to admit me if I make the golf team and pass all the qualification needed for cmu?

Your question is would an elite school accept someone who makes the golf team and meets their qualifications? I don't know I'd say the odds are about 13.7%.

That's out of order, and I'd stop trying to tie the two together if I were you.

You need to gain admittance, then if you enroll you'll have a chance to try out for the team.

It's possible you might gain admission but fail to make the team.
