Buying new irons

I have had a set of ping isk's for about 15 years. I don't play a lot of golf but I'd like to play more this year. Would it be worth the money to purchase a new set of ping g irons?

My opinion....probably not. If money is part of the equation make sure you have some fresh grips, play a few rounds and if you do in fact start playing more then get fitted for some irons. Now if getting some new irons motivates you to play more, or you just plain want to get some and money is not part of the equation, then go for it. I'd also consider finding a good instructor as you get started playing more before new clubs. My two cents.

I played with my first set of irons for almost twenty years and would have probably had them for a much longer time, but they were stolen from my garage. Thus I had to buy a new set. My first day out with them I shot my low for the year. For some reason a new set just makes it more exciting and more challenging to play this game. These days I usually just buy a new set every 3-4 years just to put that little big of excitement back into the game for me. Now after all that nonsense my answer is yes you should, but as WANZO mentioned only if money is not a problem and part of the reasoning. PING irons are still a great set of clubs and if you are only buying just to have a new set go for it. Regardless of what path you take enjoy the experience and I hope what ever you decide it works out for you. Good luck.

I might, if it's in your mindset now.  If time permits, practicing and playing more golf enjoyable.

I agree with everything @Wanzo posted.

It's not that new irons won't help some of us who are higher handicap, especially if the ones we currently have are old and not very forgiving. But I believe an improved swing makes so much more of a difference than new equipment. Quality instruction is the fastest way for most players to improve their swing.

That said, I upgraded a used set of Adams A4's two years ago to a new set of Mizunos. I saved my pennies, shopped around, waited and finally pulled the trigger. The new irons were more forgiving and I believe they helped my game a little, but more than that, I just wanted something new. The fitting ended up being BS, but I still really like the clubs and do not regret the purchase.

I'd look at Ping G irons from the past couple years. You could get a gently used set from like 2014 for just a couple hundred bucks.

Others have hinted at this, so I'll be direct:

What do you hope to get out of your new irons? The ISI.K ranked on the line between GI/SGI (using Golf Digest Hot List categories).

If the K model has stiff shafts and you're losing yardage, or not getting good launch, a move to the Ping G model might help. I got repeated hits with the G at different demo days, and despite a larger head really pops the ball out of the rough with authority.

I would suggest that the G is a seminal club - a distinctive and versatile model among the Ping offerings.

Again, what do you hope to get out of new irons?

      I added to total today by hopping it in on the first hole for an eagle. A short par 4, I hit 4 wood to 110. With a little breeze in my face I hit a 50 degree gap wedge to 2 feet and watched it hop into the hole for an eagle 2!

      Day 14 (September 18).  Morning practice, despite questionable weather (it's raining).   Worked on chipping at first, including run-ups with UW and PW;  I've noticed lately some of my near-GIRs are missing forward, with nothing but grass ahead of me, but 20-30 yards to the pin.  After a few misadventures putting those lately, I wanted to at least get a feeling for what a 30-yard chip shot that doesn't have the variance of my quarter lob wedge would feel like.  I still think "putt when you can putt" is right, but... I am less sure I have a 30 yard putt in me.  Range time also, of course, same routine as the past week or so (drill, 3-4 slow shots, etc).   Did not get to the putting green as it was starting to come down a bit more. Darn, it really is raining.  And I thought today would be a perfect day to play, seeing as how it's 9-18 and all.

      I'm in the same boat.  I think the last team event I got really excited for was the 2019 Presidents' Cup.  When I first got into golf, the Ryder Cup was an event (one among many) I used to plan my schedule around to make sure I'm able to watch it.   I'm not sure I realized how close it was until I saw this thread pop up.
