I'm a 15 handicapper and I'm getting better. I'm  thinking of getting rid of my 3 and 4 irons and simplifying my bag. I can't hit my 3-4 consistent. Also, thinking of going 3w over driver. My short game is pretty good but the long clubs aren't productive. Any advice is appreciated.

The lower numbered irons are much harder to hit for a higher handicapper. Maybe look into hybrids. My lowest numbered iron these days is the 6!  2, 3, 4, 5, are all hybrids.

Have you ever been fitted for a driver? Check around and see if there's a driver that will work for you. If you get a new driver (not always 2017, but just not a used one), often the fitting is free.

What problem do you have with driver?

I know a couple of golfers who use 3W for driver, and off the fairway. But, most people lose out on distance by using only 3W.

A 3H and 4H might help out as bridge clubs. You may have to test a few hybrids before you find a model that works for you.

Or, you might find high-lofted fairway woods (5W, 7W) work better. You just need to test things out and see what works.

Also consider taking a tune-up lesson to see if you have any swing wobbles you can cure before you get new clubs.

I used to hit 3w over driver, and dropped my 3-5 irons to use a couple hybrids. It made me feel more comfortable at the time, and there's nothing wrong with that.

The issue was obviously my swing, particularly swinging steeply into the ball.

Thanks for the replies. I tried a higher lofted driver and it seems to work. I dropped my 3&4 and got a hybrid. So I got that going for me.

I don't have a 3i in the bag, have a 3h.  But I do like having a 4i in the bag, because I have more control over ball flight (mainly trajectory) than I would with a 4h.  Just something else for you to consider.

I also dropped my 4 iron recently and don't miss it at all.

I also dumped my 3w and went to a 12* driver last fall. Never hit the 3 well from the fairway and only used it from the tee on days that I couldn't hit my driver. Once I gained confidence in the new driver loft, no need for the 3w in the bag.

I've simplified my bag and only carry 12 clubs. 11.5* Driver, 16* Three Metal, 21* Heavenwood, 4-PW, SW, and putter. I'm 67 and I've lost some distance over the years so I don't really have any gaps. Sometimes I add a 50* gap wedge, but I really don't need it.

I did the same thing, dropped my Driver for 3W and dropped a few strokes. It worked great, but something wasn't right.

I watched this video and my driver has become a lot more consistent and longer then ever actually.
