Hey guys. Last summer I was one of the top junior golfers in my area, top 5 in the state for my class. I was able to break par consistently and always broke 80. I finished highly in many amateur tournaments. I had many D1 college coaches interested in me playing for their team. This summer, however, my game has gone horribly wrong. I have yet to break 80 and am not having fun at all. When I play by myself I can shoot under par without a problem. But in a tournament I struggle. I have the putting yips within 5 feet of the hole, and miss everything. Any advice on what to do? I'm about to quit playing the game all together.

Take a week off, then visit with your instructor and talk rationally about a plan.

I had some issues with missing short putts briefly. I realized I was taking too long of a back swing for them. Take it FWIW. Maybe you should see a sports psychologist?

Agree with talking to your coach, but you need to look into the mental side of your game.

Whether a budding musician, or actor, or athelete, they all must perform when it counts.  Some people are never able to do that. They are great in practice, but can't pull it together when they have to.

The good thing for you is that you have already been able to do that, you just need to get yourself back to that point in time.

Hang in there and don't give up on something you obviously have talent to do well.

Second a sport psychologist, or at least a qualified cognitive behavioral therapist.

Is there any chance that you experienced a growth spurt over the winter which affected the fit of your clubs?

Quitting is the easy way out. If you quit, you will be sorry for that decision later on.

Put your clubs away for a week or two. Next tournament  just play by yourself, and don't think about whats going on around you.

So is it only a problem with putting or are other parts of your game in disarray?

Mainly short putts a little yippy  with it . Sometimes my drives hurt my score though. Irons are solid though as always.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
