Ok first off, squeaky new 54 yr old ball chaser. I currently have a set of Ping eye 2 blue dots 1-9 pw,sw, lw, Ben hogan 3 hybrid, tour edge bazooka QL Driver, odyssey DX putter.   Ok the irons have a arthritic grip on them but grips are to big for me. But I do hit them straight. Now instructor commented on how I either need to regrip all the clubs minus the putter.

Now not sure about length or flex. I got the whole iron set for 5 bucks at a garage sale so I'm not that vested in them. So regrip or buy new.

Now with info in hand not really playing a full 18 yet mostly play 9's either a par 3 (shot 41 yesterday) or 9 on the par 72 (48 was last round).  Short to mid Irons I hit pretty straight. Long irons and drivers I slice/fade right.

Many info thoughts or jabs( in good humor) budget about 500.00

That's not a bad beginning setup at all....especially for $5!

I'd regrip, at a cost of about $125 or so, and play/learn for another year or so.  Keep saving towards some new clubs and then get fit and pull the trigger when you (and your instructor) know a little more about your game.

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li

Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind

Just concerned about polishing a turd ? new grips on old clubs. The tech from 30 year old clubs will I see improvement in new tech or get me right before i.e.. lessons and time on the course. ?

Ping eye2s are fine, ask your instructor. You probably won't buy better clubs for $500.

Regrip and play, you can do it yourself for less if you need to save money.

Any thoughts on grips would lean towards golf pride

Golf Pride grips are just fine.  Knowing this may be an interim solution, you could use one of the lower-priced grips like Tour Wrap or Tour Velvet.  The other option, if you can find someone who uses air to mount the grips rather than tape and solvent, is to buy more expensive grips that can be removed and re-used at a later time.

Agree with the all the comments/advice that has been given.

Plenty of people still play with Eye2's. Only concern I have is if the Blue fits you. If not mistaken, they are 1* upright and 1/2 inch longer than black. intended for someone around 6'1'' or taller, but this is not a hard and fast rule as arm length plays into it as well.

I don't look at grips as an investment or improvement, more like changing the oil in your car, or waxing it. New grips make old clubs feel new, as they are the only interface with the club.

I like Lamkin Crosslines, if I don't have something specific in mind. A good durable, no frills grip. Certainly the Golf Pride grips are just as good or better, just my preference. I have begun trying the GP multi-compound in a premium grip.

Is the mounting something I could do? Also saw a video of pine meadow clubs being made and they used air to mount them.  Watched a few YouTube videos on regripping doesn't look like rocket science but is there a hidden secret that makes getting it done better?

I mounted new grips on a complete set of irons (4-GW) using a can of compressed air. Like the kind you use to clean off your keyboard. It's not at all difficult.

So my. Low gun attachment in my air compressor would work then ? Also. What are the advantages or disadvantages of one method over the other?

Absolutely. If you can lower the pressure lower the pressure though. You don't need a lot of air flow, or pressure at all. I like it because it was cheaper, and I can regrip in 2 minutes if I wanted to.

Oh, and for the record Ping Eye II's are great clubs. Yes, there are "better" clubs out there, but if you hit those well enjoy them. I have a set I dust off every once in a while and I still hit them fine.

Thanks. My local club wants 10 bucks a club to regrip lamkin grips. Another place did 3 clubs for 20 bucks and used DTG grips which I see go for a buck or two. Not sure which grips to buy  golf pride on high end dtg on the bottom. Lamkins in the middle. See I can get a full 13 set with tape and solvent for about 70ish of the lamkins or 27 for dtg. And golf pro tight at 140   I do like the pings and I can hit the mid irons nice and straight.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
