Hello I'm new to the forum and new to golf. Been hacking for approx. a year and a half now. I hope this is the right subject for this section but here it goes. I currently game taylormade m2's with Nippon modus 3 120 stiff's. I got them this last February being fitted at golf galaxy. Their monitor had me hitting my 7i at 150 yards. Now just a short 6 months later (and after some lessons and controlling/slowing my swing) I'm hitting the same club 180 yards sometimes longer which seems a little too long (especially with my 4i going 210 and 9i/150). I recently hit the P770s and Jpx 900 forged and they were giving me more "traditional" numbers (7i @150-160). I'm about a 15 handicap...wondering if it's time to upgrade? Any help would be appreciated.

4 iron: 210
5 iron: 200
6 iron: 190
7 iron: 180
8 iron: 170
9 iron: 160

Looks to me like you have good yardage gaps between your irons. You might be hitting your 9 iron slightly shorter than you'd want. You are not that far off. I would say check to see if the loft on your irons are good first. You might be able to tweak them a few degrees to fix that yardage drop on the 9 iron.

Most guys would love to get that kind of distance with their irons.  If your distance and direction are reasonably consistent, I see no reason to change.  I'll disagree a tiny bit with @saevel25, its pretty common to have slightly larger gaps at the short end of the irons (i.e. between 7 and 8, between 8 and 9) than at the longer end, so your gaps seem fine.  The biggest task you have is to figure out how to deal with the shots from 130 yards and in.

If you dont want your M2's i'll gladly take them off your hands :-D

Why would you complain about gaining 30 yards in distance with the same club on a more controlled swing?? That makes 0 sense to me. You said 150 is a traditional 7 iron distance, for who? Each person's distances are different. Some guys need a 5 or 6 iron to go 150, some guys can hit a pitching wedge 150.

180 yd 7 iron means that assuming youre playing courses somewhere in the 6500 yd or less range, you should rarely need anything more than that into the greens on par 4s, no complaints about that. My distances are about 5-10 yds less than yours and it is more than enough. When I play shorter courses around me, ones around 6000 yds, I have driver then wedge into most greens, or 3 wood then 9/8 iron into greens.

Well I wish my "traditional" 7 iron was actually a little longer...I'm not familiar with the M2's, are they not consistent?  Is your 7 irons sometimes 180, sometimes 190?  Do you spray them a bit?  I can see the issue with this.  But if you know how far and what shape they will fly every time, there's no need to change.  But if you want something with more precision and consistency then I understand the change.  Or if you just want something new and shiny to look at, that's also understandable.  It's all up to you.

Step 1.  Post a video of your swing in the member swing section of this site.

Like myself, you may be getting artificially long distances out of your irons by having too closed of a face at impact.  (essentially turning a 7-iron into a 6 or a 5).

being a 15 handicap and having distances like that *usually* spells swing issues of some sort..

Well,....If you're hitting them that long and hitting them flush, why do you want to "upgrade"?

I'd say probably buy more wedges.  Maybe a 46 - 48* specialty pitching wedge in addition to the one that comes in your set.

Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate it.  saevel25 I think you hit the nail on the head. My 4-8 are spot on yardage and flight. Played 18 today and the only gapping issues were with my wedges. I might have to add one.  Thanks again to all responses.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
