Need fairway club advice

I am thinking about getting a 3 wood but thought I would get some advice before I purchase. I currently have an Adams 10.5 driver and a TaylorMade Rescu Mid 19 degree 3 hybrid, I then have a 3 iron and so on. I am wanting to get something to fill the gap between my driver and hybrid but only have room for 1 more club so i am asking if you would recommend a 3 wood, 5 wood or another hybrid?

The typical advice revolves around even spacing of lofts, but there's some debate as to whether to include the driver in this.

My suggestion is to get a fairway wood in the 15-17 degree range. Depending on the company, this is either a 3-wood, a 4-wood, or a 5+ wood. The loft, not whether the club is called something, is what matters. Will your local store let you hit several until you find one you like? If so, give a few a try. Most of the folks here have a favorite fairway wood brand.

my driver is 260-275ish... with some longer, and some shorter.
I use a 15* 3-wood to hit 230-240
my 18* hybrid goes 220
I then carry a 20* hybrid for 210
a 4 iron for 200 and so on

So I would say a FW metal around 15* would do the trick... if you really prefer hybrids you can find some around 16-17* and they would still help fill the gap.

If you like your TM Rescue Mid....try looking at the Taylor Made V-Steel on clearance at various online stores. It will feel pretty matched to the Rescue Mid.

I'd go to bobicks(clbhouse,net,E.Watts) have them tape up as many three woods as they will...then get online ebay&so; on find the best priced club that you hit the best...

One club I will never part with is the Callaway Steelhead III 3 metal. Some pros still play the same head. Was introduced in 2002, was voted best 3 metal in 2003. Destined to be a classic. Just a personal preference, but worth looking around for one. The shaft is up to your swing characteristics.

i would definately recommend a 3 (fairway) wood. around 15 degrees. a steel headed f'way wood is perfect from the deck.

I have a hybrid but i never use it. I prefer having the two woods. the taylor made V-steel is great!

How about Titleist 906F4 15.5deg? It's a solid club and I honestly think you should demo it.

I too am surprised no one has mentioned the SQ 2 fairway. Of the recent offerings by the Big Boys this was also one of my favorites. I am excited to see what Callaway is going to offer with the new Hyper X fairways. I agree though, if you an get your hands on a TM V-Steel, I would seriously consider it.

I recently got a Taylormade Burner 3-wood. It is my first (on so far my only) wood. It's a very forgiving club and even an absolute beginner like me can have some good hits ... sometimes

I have a r7 steel head 13 degree and love it. My buddy plays a Cleveland Launcher 15 degree and hits it very consistantly. I would recommend going to a golf store that offers a driving range so that you can hit either a 13 degree or 15 degree fairway wood and try hitting everything you are considering.

With an index of 36, I would suggest trying an 18* 5W, a lot easier to hit than a 3W and distance will still be quite good.

It somewhat depends on your course management strategy, what you are trying to achieve. If the course has short Par 5's and you want to go for it in two, then use a 3W, but if the Par 5's are long, then it might be best to lay up to your favorite yardage (ie. 100yds) with a 5W, often times a 3W will hit the ball too far for a perfect layup. If you have long Par 4's and are hitting 210-220 into the pin, then a 5W is much better because it is a lot easier to hit the ball high and drop it down soft. Not many players can hit a 3W into small greens.

One of Tiger's new advantages is that he hits his 5W as far as most hit their 3W and he can hit it much higher, stopping the ball close to pins for eagle. He hits it 285!
