Yesterday I saw some Top Flite drivers on sale at Dicks for $19.  Does anyone know if they would be any good?

They won't be anything special, but as long as you don't expect perfection out of them, I say go for it.

In my bag:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 | 15º 3-Wood: Ping G410 | 17º 2-Hybrid: Ping G410 | 19º 3-Iron: TaylorMade GAPR Lo |4-PW Irons: Nike VR Pro Combo | 54º SW, 60º LW: Titleist Vokey SM8 | Putter: Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas H7

It's good enough to teach you how to swing a driver, and reward you with good shots when you hit the ball well.

I'm no expert, but I'd guess the key differences between a Top Flite and a "premium" (say, $199 and up) driver will be forgiveness on off-center hits, the inability to get fit for your swing, and the potential for inconsistency in shaft flex.

What would you expect from a $1000 car?! You might get lucky, and you might not! My buddy bought a 3 hybrid from Wal Mart and he loves it! Hits it a mile and string straight! Another buddy has a Wal Mart driver that he can hit better than drivers costing hundreds more at the golf shop!

But it comes down to luck! In any mass produced product you may find one or two that are far superior to "the herd". Heck, for 19 bucks I'd buy it and hit it! You never know until you try!

If these are the same drivers as the one that comes in set that dick's sells, steer clear.  They have protruding, rounded faces that make exaggerate left to right unless you nail it dead center.

Wont be anything special at that price. I found that on cheapo new clubs that the shafts are really soft and too flexible.

Dont get me wrong, some cheap clubs can be excellent. I bought a set of Hippo Beast bi-metal irons 3-SW for £40 as an experiment with heavier shafts. They are the same age as the Wilson Di9's i had been gaming and in top condition. They are superb clubs....ended up selling the Wilsons and using the cash on a new Cleveland putter.

Might be better looking for second hand premium or towards that end of the quality scale, but on the other hand for $19.99, if its crap then you havent lost a great deal.

Russ, from "sunny" Yorkshire = :-(

In the bag: Driver: Ping G5 , Woods:Dunlop NZ9, 4 Hybrid: Tayormade Burner, 4-SW: Hippo Beast Bi-Metal , Wedges: Wilson 1200, Putter: Cleveland Smartsquare Blade, Ball: AD333

Thanks for the advice.

@AmericanGolfer I would think you could pick up a pretty nice, better quality, used Ping G5 or G10 driver for the same price.  That's the route I'd suggest.  The cheap brand drivers are usually pretty bad.

I know you didn't ask about wedges, but just FYI, the Top Flite Tour wedges however, are actually really nice, and only about $35

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
