My buddy and I are looking to plan a long weekend golf trip for the first weekend in December.

It would have to be somewhere south since we are in Ohio. I've looked at Talamore where the Newport Cup was just held and so far I think that is the leading candidate, they seem to have a bunch of packages and specials available.

The only downside it is about 8.5 hours from us in Ohio. Not too bad and can definitely be done in a day, but I was curious if anyone knows any other resorts that are closer and in the Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee area that are open into early December?

Even recommendations for which villa or which courses to golf at if we do choose Talamore would be helpful!

I think in VA, at least near me, would be too cold in  December for a trip, we still play golf but it can get pretty damn cold.  @GolfLug would know better about VA Beach for golf around that time.  Outer Banks might be an option, but I'm not that familiar with that area for golf courses to play.  Once you get past Richmond, you're not far from NC and once you hit NC you're not that far from Raleigh which is not that far from Pinehurst.

Good to know that Virginia will probably be too cold. It looks like now I have it narrowed down to Talamore in NC and Legends Golf Resort in Myrtle Beach. Its 2 additional hours to get to Myrtle Beach, but for the price of 3 rounds and 2 nights at Talamore, I can get 4 nights and 4 rounds with breakfast, lunch, and 2 beers each round at Legends.

Trying to be budget-friendly for this particular trip so leaning towards Legends right now.

Expect it to be in the 50s in PH area as well in December. Not exactly Florida weather but for you northerners 50s would be a heat wave..:-P

Shoot upper 50s and sun with minimal wind is borderline shorts weather! I prefer cooler ish temps like that anyway, I dont sweat as much and I dont fatigue as quickly at cooler temps.

I've spent the week of Thanksgiving in Pinehuerst (at Talamore, actually) every year since 2007.  We've had a very few frost delays, and most years its really pleasant.  We've played in shorts lots of times.  Myrtle Beach will be about the same, or slightly warmer. Its a great time for either, not at all crowded, less slow play problems, easier to get a seat in a restaurant, you'll love it.  If you decide on Pinehurst, I can recommend a few good places.

Check into a flight and rental car to Las Vegas. I had an uncle who lived in Elkhart Indiana. He would get these junket/gambling flights to Ely, NV for like $120.00 round trip. He'd rent a car, and make the drive down to Vegas. Something similar is probably available to Vegas.

In December the temps can be any where between 60-80 degrees. I played today in 90 degree weather.

Just a thought.

Still waiting to hear back on emails from reservation agents from both Talamore and Legends so we will see what they say. Good to know about the shorts and the lack of crowds.

It looks like we are pretty set on Myrtle Beach.

The 3 courses we are going to do are

Myrtle Beach National - Kings North

The Wizard

Legends (Haven't decided which course yet)

I've done some research and gotten a few quotes, will be right around $300 for 3 nights in a hotel and all 3 rounds. 2 of the rounds will include lunch and 2 beers!

Nothing wrong with Myrtle Beach. I went there last year during the spring and had a lot of fun. My favorite course there was Pine Lakes Country Club. It' very historic and near the beach. It was also designed by architect Robert White, the first president of the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) of America.

Myrtle Beach National has a large facility. It was pretty booked when I went and the pace of play was a little slower than I had hoped. But there's nothing wrong with it. Also, I thought that Wildwing Avocet was an awesome course.

As far as Virginia in December, it can be nice or terrible. That's just Virginia. It would be 55 and sunny, then snow the next afternoon. Virginia Beach's golf scene sucks. Hate to say it but it's true. No need to waste your time or travel a good distance. Lot of buttholes in VB too. Particularly at VB National. Will never go back there.

Kingsmill is the spot to go in Virginia (besides Primland of course but Primland is its own deal). The all you play package gives you a place to stay on the James River with access to everything at Kingsmill (health club, indoor pool, game room, etc). Busch Gardens is also about a half a mile away. You can see Kingsmill from the top of the Alpengeist roller coaster. Kingsmill may be better suited for a family trip though.

A special spot in the South, to me, is Wild Dunes in Charleston. The two courses there are very special. Tough, but really a treat. It's also a short ride into downtown.

The Outer Banks, NC is a personal favorite. But I'm from the shore and enjoy the water so I may be a little biased. But.. if you are in a big group (8+).. you can find massive, hooked up houses on the beach for an affordable price. Kilmarlic is my favorite but Nagshead Golf Links is a pretty cool course too.

    • Day 6: lighter session today after a long day. Just some mirror work and slow swings to try to get my feels down.
    • @Philip Belgium,  If I haven't already, Welcome to TST.  Your injury sounds serious and I hope you fully recover.   Thanks for sharing your story.  ..... each day get 1-2% better.   (A ray of sunshine and a positive outlook)
    • Day 91 (1  Aug 25) - Pre-tournament practice round today…had some great up and downs for par saves.  Rain came in this evening so it will be a totally different playing course tomorrow.
    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
