This whole built like a linebacker thing.

Recommended Posts

I don't buy the whole Day, Tiger or Rory are built like a linebacker. However, after going to numerous events, the one guy I will say was decently big was Jhonny Vegas. He might have been able to pass as a football player. No one else so far.

Any PGA pros that are actually big in size?

None of them are big as a linebacker.

The average NFL Linebacker is around 6-1 to 6-2 inches and weights about 240-245 lbs.

Tiger is about 6-1 and about 185-190 lbs. Just saying, an NFL Linebacker has about 60 lbs of muscle mass on Tiger. Rory is 5-10 and weights about 165 lbs.

I think this just goes to show that people have no clue how built someone is.

Well, Vegas is 6'4 230 pounds. That is pretty big. I agree though that Tiger and Rory aren't anything other than fit.

NFL linebackers are around 10% body fat or lower. Even if his body fat percentage is low, that doesn't mean he has a linebacker type body. They specifically work out different body parts to be at the peak athletic ability for their position.

Gary Woodland is a large man. Ernie Els is also pretty big. Neither are really built like linebackers, but they're pretty large in comparison to other PGA Tour players.

I got you. There is a difference between being "big" in the normal world and a NFL Players.

Years ago I met Larry Csonka at his store in Lisbon, OH. He was humongous! Looked much bigger in person than he ever looked on TV. I shook his hand and he shook my arm!

My buddy used to deliver pharmaceuticals to drugstores and hospitals. He ran into LeBron James at an Akron area pharmacy. He told me, "Dude, he's not just tall, he's a giant!"

There have always been some big golfers. Like way back in the day the Tour had George Bayer and George Archer. I remember seeing Darren Clarke for the first at the WGC Bridgestone, wondering who he was, and thinking that he looked like a rugby player.

If the purses on Tour keep getting richer, I think you might see players with skills in other sports deciding to pursue a career there. Well, not the guys who are looking for guaranteed contracts. Every game takes it's own kind of physical toll on a body, but golf is relatively mild compared to some. You don't have to worry about CTE, or not being able to walk when you're 50.

I think we're already there. That's why Gary Woodland, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, etc. are in the sport.

Yes, that's true. DJ looks like he could be a point guard in the NBA or a safety in the NFL. One thing I noticed about many of the top guys at the WGC, they just look so fit! Doesn't look like there's an ounce of fat on them.

Definitely. I think were going to get talents on tour who build much more on athleticism in the future. You can already see the change but theres still quite a way to go.

Dont think we are tbh. Dustin Johnson at 6'3/190 is by no means very built. Just lean. Koepka and Woodland have a bit more fat on them and probably a little more muscle.

Im pretty sure the average point guard has a good 20-30 pounds on him. Just being lean doesnt really make you any more fit than someone a bit heavier but still within the normal range. Imo the next step were going to see is guys putting on some more muscle.

Safety in NFL, no. Needs more muscle. NBA Point guard he wouldn't be that undersized. John Wall and Curry are about the same weight.

Are you sure having more muscle mass helps this sport? Seems like heavy arms could be an impediment?

Depends on how they exercise. You can be big and be very flexible.

True, but does it help to be that much bigger?

It also depends on genetics as well. You can have two 6-4" 245 lbs guys look completely different.
