Day 290

Even though I was exhausted from the conference and victim of a later flight back to my home, it did feel good to make contact with a golf ball.  Nothing too spectacular as I use only my 6i to get the body moving.  Distance was only OK and there were some strong pulls in the result. Still happy to move the body more fully.

Day 9: Played in a men's club event - a shamble. You pick the best drive of a group of 4 and then all play from there. I shot a +4, which was fine but not great. Team played okay overall, but didn't finish in the money.

Day 480

Putting practice this morning. Greens were a little crowded with the weekend golfers, so I employed my old "rabbit, and dog" routine.

I have a red ball I keep in my bag as target (rabbit) ball. What I do is, without looking, I roll the ball behind me as I am walking away. I take a few steps, stop, and turn around. I then drop my putting ball (dog).

I then go into pre-putting routine which involves green reads, an intermediate target. for putter face alignment, taking my stance, checking ball position in my stance, and then stroking the ball along my chosen putting line, over the intermediate target.

The goal is to roll the "dog" and hit the "rabbit". This also gives me a smaller target to aim for since the red ball is much smaller than an actual pin hole.

Another advantage is I am not in the way of others, nor are they in my way.

I also tend to focus on my back stroke length on putts. (Pitches & chips too) I try to keep the back stroke the same length as possible for the shot. By doing this, I eliminate any "jerky" motion in the transition from the back to forward parts of the swing. To get the various distances I need, I either add, or subtract the physical energy ("club head speed") expended in my overall stroke. I have always felt the smoother the swing, the more accurate the shot turns out.

DAY 525    I did not get out until 1 pm.... bad timing... as it was 85 degrees, with bright sun.   So I could only manage 90 minutes.   I worked on my full swing, continuing to do drills to improve the turn around my sternum in the backswing and downswing... rather than swaying and lunging (well that is a little exterme :-) ).   Then was able, through the work I am doing with the Impact Snap training aid, to better unbend my right arm keeping my wrist in a better position  at impact.  This is new for me, and my right deltoid muscle and upper arm could feel they are being used. This is helping me improve my angle of attack at impact.

Day 291

Got out today to get some fuller swings with the 6i and 7i. Again, more in terms of getting myself after about 5 days without taking really full shots.  Overall, quite good and I was able to correct the reasons one or two went way off.  Tomorrow will be a day, due to schedule, of putting and a serious session with the Orange Whip®.

Day 481

Out early since there is rain in the area.

Hit approach shots up to a little under 100 yards.

Target was a thick palm tree about 110 yards away. Goal was to land balls on a line to that tree.

Focuses were on stance, ball position, cub face aim using an intermediate target, and putting an easy swing on the ball.

Started out using shorter clubs, and graduated to the longer ones. Different clubs with different length back swings.

Going to see what Ma Nature has planned for today. Might get a round in later.

Day 292

10 shots each Driver, GX-7 and hybrids 3h,4h,5h and 7i/w

No real disasters for any of them though I certainly was not swinging at full speed. Driver made me the happiest with good speed, distance and no overly high arcs.  If I had to pick a nadir for today's work, it would have to be the 5h, but not for a systemic problem other than the owner operator tended to overcompensate for the natural pull in the shots.  When he stopped tryin to be too cute with the aiming, the shots were much better off.

DAY 526   Spent a couple of hours on the range working on rotating versus swaying on my backswing, and staying in posture during my downswing, ....  then an hour on the putting green working with the Pelz Putting Tutor to train and get feedack on my skill in starting the ball on line, and the Pelz Putter Clips working on centeredness of hit.  Feeling good about my putting, and some progress on my full swing.

Then headed to River Club for a playing lesson with my coach.  The goal was to look at how well I am transferring the practice on the range to the course.  I shot 2 over par for the nine holes, and learned a couple of valuable lessons that should help me in going forward.   One, I had a very consistent Play Box time of 8 seconds except for one shot which got over 9 seconds, and of course I pushed the shot right off the tee into the right rough, also that when I hit partial shots I tend to hit them with tooo relaxed a motion and they come up short of my intended distance.   Missed birdie opportunities on the two par 5s due to this.   AND of course, I need to keep working on my turn back and through.

Practiced putting today. Most of my focus was just getting the ball to the back of the hole. Dead weight putting basically. Mostly short and mid range putts.

Day 482

Just some LW practice this morning. 1/2 & full swings.

My 62* LW is one of the tougher clubs in my bag for men to hit. I don't use it that much, so I need to devote practice time to it. This, so that when I do need to use it, the results will be less "iffy".

Focuses were on set up, ball position, club face aim, and making sure my hands led the club face into the ball.

I have a warm up drill I use for this high lofted club, where I make slow swings, while dragging the club on the turf, behind my hands, and then releasing my wrists, and swinging into my follow through.

Goal was to get  good, clean, ball first impacts. There was also a little divot left in front of the ball. Actually that divot was more of a "trim cut" on the turf.

After about 56 LW swings, I spent about 15 minutes on putting practice.

Going to play 18 holes later on today

DAY 527   Spent almost 90 minutes on the putting green using the Pelz Putting Tutor to train and get feedback in starting the ball on line....  then three other drills working on balance, and tempo.  Then 60 minutes in my monthly mental coaching group session.  Today was all about training for and handling the pressure of putting when in competition.  Lots of good nuggets of advice.  The spent 30 minutes working on LONG putts 50-70 feet.  I am confident I will be facing these lenght putts on an upcoming golf trip.

    • I'm not sure I'm reading you right. You're trying to undo pulling the club across your body first? If I'm reading that right, that's definitely backwards. It's what you're doing with your legs, hips, and chest that force you to do that. Impossible to fix the pull across without fixing the body first. If you "fix" that with your body doing what it is now, then you'll be swinging like a foot outside the ball and never make contact. I write "fix" because if you get your body moving the right way the pulling across the body problem will more or less fix itself, mostly if not perfectly. If that's obvious and I'm misreading, I apologize.
    • I find this new ABS system interesting on its potential impact on the game of baseball from the pitching perspective.  The ABS system is projecting a 2D plane at the middle of the plate, instead of having the strike zone be a 3D box (really the dimension of the plate, but no pitcher is nicking that back triangle of the plate).  MLB to test automated ball-strike challenge system during spring games Umpires first began calling both balls and strikes way back in 1864, and baseballers have been arguing about those calls ever since. Strike-zone judgment has been the subject of some untold number of verbal (and, yes... I was thinking, this should have a big impact on pitchers who throw breaking balls. The breaking ball now has to be thrown higher up in the strike zone to catch the bottom of the new 2D zone. If the 2D zone is about the correct dimension of the previous strike zone, that 2D zone would be at the front of the plate. Now it is 8.5" back. So, the same breaking ball has to be thrown much higher to hit the new position of that low part of the plate. If the ball curves dramatically towards the end of the pitch, where the hitter has to hit the curveball (typically 8 inches in front of the plate), then the curve ball is maybe like 6 inches higher than normal? Just throwing out a number. I think that turns what use to be an at the knee strike into a something a hitter would crush.  Maybe the opposite is true, that breaking balls at the top of the zone might be more in play. It might look more that the ball is at the shoulders and hit the top of the plate. Maybe pitches who can delay the vertical break of the ball till much later might still see the same success since that delay allows them to keep the ball lower. I still think it will elevate any breaking ball pitch thrown low to clip that bottom of the strike zone.
    • Update from last lesson up in Erie, PA with Erik.  Backswing Hinge wrist early. Slight wrist rotation and hinging about 60 degrees away from the club at set up. So, 30 degrees from the toe line. It is going to feel like the entire hinge is done by A2.  As I hinge sooner and more, just turn to the top of the swing. The tricepshould come off the chest.  Feel a ton of width in right arm at top of swing. Downswing Keeping the width in the right arm. Bring the hands down to my right hip with a little right wrist extensions and left wrist flexion. Club head should feel like it is behind my right hip. This is done with the arms, not with the chest. Keep the chest high. It should feel like I am going to hit the ground 1-FT at about a 45-degree angle from the ball behind me.  ^This is in conjunction with the hands down. Get the left side back and around me. Feel very little to no weight shift. I shift like 6-7", I need to keep it about 3".  That feels like I pretty much don't slide at all.  Part of the turn is also pushing off with my left foot. Pushing my butt back behind me. This needs to happen almost immediately when my hands start to come down. It may need to feel like I do it before my hands go down. I am thinking that the feel of me shifting left onto my lead foot to push off is going to be part of the pushing off feel. If I am feeling that pressure at A4 or later, then it isn't soon enough.  Minor Injury notice: My back decided to spasm and lock up a bit when I was bent over tying my shoes. 😭. It's starting to feel better but still warning me to be careful. So, I will be taking a few days here to recuperate. I am then going to get back into the gym for some weightlifting. I think I need to strengthen up my core more to protect myself here.
