I'm a beginner, I don't have a 3 Wood Rescue yet, so I'm thinking about buying a Taylormade Wood Rescue 3H  either M1 or M2. Do I need a rescue ? if so any suggestions regarding M1 or M2?

I have:

Taylormade R 15 Driver 10.5

Taylormade M1 Fairway 3 HL

Taylormade Rbladez 4 HL Iron

and all Rbladez iron set including wedges AW, PW, SW, LW

Thanks

What are your yardages, and do you feel like you need to fill in a yardage gap towards the top end of your iron set?

If you think it will help lower your score, then you probably need it.

If it will make you feel more comfortable having it in your bag, then yes, I would add it to your bag.

I will assume you have room in your bag for it. If not, what club gets evicted to make room for this new club? Will that club be missed?

You know your game (to a certain point) better than anyone else. Worst case scenario is get it. If it doesn't work out, you have done what most of us have already done ourselves. Spent money on something that turned out to be something we didn't need.

You certainly don’t need it, but it would properly fill out your set.

How much of a beginner are you? How many rounds have you played?

If you are truly just starting, I would say no, you don't need one right now. Really you should carry about 7-8 clubs including the putter until you are hitting consistent distances with varying clubs. I would recommend using the Driver, 3W, and 5-7-9-PW-SW and putter, or 6-8-PW -SW if you it them better. It is not bad to have them in the bag, but it just complicates your decisions at this stage. Learn to advance the ball toward the hole with the clubs you have, and when you are hitting consistent distances you will be able to determine what clubs you need to fill gaps. Now if youare already advanced to the stage where you are hitting consistent distances with about 8-12 yards or so difference between clubs, then it is time to decide if there is a gap and how to fill it. So if you hit your 3W 200 and your 4 iron 175, then a 3H, 4H, or 5W might slide in there nicely.

As far as the TM M1/2 hybrids, they are good clubs and can be purchased at attractive prices now that the M3/4 series is out.

I find a hybrid fills a gap between my 3 wood and 5 iron, and is easier to use than a long iron. But others have different preferences.

The problem with most of the newer rescues for established golfers, (Those who have been playing for a couple years or more) is the offset/draw bias. It usually only happens with the game-improvement and super game improvement models for players who have a higher clubhead speed and usually can square the clubface reasonably well.

That being said, a beginner would benefit from the aforementioned models above. The M1 and M2 are fine for players who are in the beginner/high-handicap section these days. These models are especially good for players who tend to push or slice the ball, but that being said you'll still slice or push the ball anyway due to ball flight laws.

I'm a little better player, so I play a "players" model hybrid. I personally play the Tour Edge Exotics CBX Hybrid at 20°, which is a model you just can't miss to the left with, which is gaining a ton of traction on the PGA Tour Champions.

So to answer your question, you don't necessarily need a 3H, but it is nice to have it in the bag for those long second shots on par-4s and par-5s, tee shots on long par-3s and tight par-4s... and good clubs for light to intermediate rough to advance the ball.

Hope this helps.

For what it’s worth I have a taylormade rescue 3 in the bag and I absolutely love it. One of my best clubs.

Another thing to consider: Can you hit a 3H? Some players have trouble getting good launch on a 3H. Before you buy, try out both a 3H and a 4H.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
